  • My first pair Of REI Saharas lasted nigh on to 7 years. I (my wife) did have to sew up the butt seam once because I slide over rocks when scrambling. My second pair has gone two hard seasons including the JMT (1 and 1/2) and two sections of the SHR. I hike with the zippers partially open and pull up the lower legs (zippers open) when crossing streams. I don't hike with them as...

  • Bear attacks are such a rarity in CA that this one attracted by attention. I only got a look at it on somebody else's cell phone. It sounded like somebody was out running and got between two bears in heat. One of the bears took exception to his presence and mauled him. He played dead and the bear left him to be. Is it black bears - play dead and brown bears - run away or the other...

  • I know you can get phone access there about 50 yards from the "shore" out by the trailers. I call my wife from there every year and don't pay the VVR fee. Not sure about internet. The signal may not be reliable enough to do actual data transfer. • Mostly what Bob said except I never met the Mountain man of DLJT and have camped there a number of times -down to the right (going south) or up over the bridge up on the right. There are some new restrictions at Purple lake this year so you are supposed to camp up around to the left of Purple Lake as you hit it going south. You "can't" camp near the Lake and trail anymore. And...
