  • Hi Krishna, your friend will not need a permit if they come in as a day hike. I went into Independence the last 3 years. The major problem with Independence is getting a ride into town and back to the trail head. I have always gotten a ride just take some time. You can resupply yourself in TM, Mammoth Lakes (Reds Meadow), VVR, MTR, Bishop (South Lake pack station ) and Independence (Onion Valley Pack station) at first I was going to take 32 days to hike the JMT this year but I was able to walk longer and hike up to 12 per day.
