  • Bighorn sightings are awesome. We saw six last year, just northwest of Pinchot Pass. I, too, had never seen one backpacking in the Sierra until last year. I know that some were introduced into the SEKI area somewhere. So great to see them. Your trip sounds awesome. Debra

  • I've driven the road to VVR and Edison/Florence Lakes a few times. I didn't think it was any big deal. The bigger deal, as Bob said, is family members hiking from the Florence Lake ferry drop off (if it's even running) in to MTR, especially if they aren't hikers/backpackers. Debra

  • Hi Lynn. I successfully use the 600mg Ibuprofen 3x daily starting the day before arriving at the trailhead, and continuing for about 4 days, then backing off to twice daily. This, coupled with the "hike high, sleep low" plan, and sleeping no more than 1,000' (give or take) higher than the previous night. I am prone to exercise/dehydration-triggered migraines and swelling knees...

  • Drove up the Glacier Point road today and zipped up to Sentinel Dome for lunch. Everything seems so dry. Debra

  • Kevin, ditto what John advised about the recreation.gov website, Inyo National Forest, Wilderness Permits. Select the Cottonwood Lakes trail head as your entry point. Debra

  • John, we're planning exactly that NOBO route section hike and easy first few days this August. I want to take time to acclimate, and feel fresh and energized for Whitney. We're older hikers (although 60 is the new 40), and mosey along at 8-9 miles a day on average. First night dropping our car and camping at Onion Valley at about 9,100'. Second night, after transport by Paul...

  • Search this forum for lots of info. Go to VVR's website for details. Also, just email Jim at VVR and he can explain their services. Also check the Yosemite National Park website for info on the new bus service to Fresno. Debra

  • Chris, We live in Central CA and did not want to leave a car all the way up at VVR, so we took Amtrak to Fresno, then had VVR pick us up at the train station (they also pick up at the airport), and drive us to VVR, stopping at Prather on the way to pick up our already reserved wilderness permit. $175 for the ride for 1-6 people. We hitched out of Roads End (no public transportation...

  • My husband and I hiked VVR to Cesar Grove last August. We averaged 9 miles per day, and it took us 12 days. We entered using the Bear Creek Cut Off trail, and exited at Woods Creek down through Paradise Valley to Roads End. A wonderful trip. Debra
