Subject: [John Muir Trail] Weather update - Tioga Pass Road closed but may re-open

If anyone wants a last hit of the Tioga Road - Tuolumne Meadows area of Yosemite , you might have a last chance this coming week.

If Tioga Pass Road is plowed early next week, I'm thinking of going up and snowshoeing around a little to celebrate my birthday - 64 on Tuesday. I'll carcamp at Hodgdon Meadow (or head over to Lee Vining and stay in a Motel).

So I thought I'd share my weather and road conditions research.

XC skiers might also have a good chance next week to see some parts of the park that are hard to access in mid-winter..

The Tioga Road closes each year depending on snowfall.  Sometimes in October - sometimes in December - but usually sometime in November.   It's closed right now as I write, but the Yosemite Tioga Status page shows that it is not yet closed for the year.  Some snow is coming in between now and the weekend (see weather report below) and if the road is plowed one more time after this snow, it should be pretty, with some fresh snow on the meadows and more on the surrounding peaks.

NPS supplied this info by e-mail today:

":I'm confident in saying the [Tioga] road will not reopen this weekend, but afterwards it's still uncertain.  We'll have to wait and see.  Whether or not it reopens again will depend on how weather goes following this storm, or the decision may be made as this storm progresses, since the severity is always unpredictable despite predictions. "

For a webcam near Tuolumne Meadows (actually from nearby Dana Meadows) see

http://tenaya. ucsd.edu/ tioga/tioga/ tioga_currenta. jpg - for the picture (is dated and timed - should refresh periodically)

http://tenaya. ucsd.edu/ tioga/tioga/ View-Description .jpg - for an explanation of what you are seeing

      For road conditions, go to

      http://www.dot. ca.gov/

and enter 120 (the Road number for Tioga Pass Road ) in the appropriate box.

or call 209-372-0200 and then press 1 and then press 1 again (press 1 and then 2 for weather)

Right now CA-120 closed at Crane Flat (near the entrance into Yosemite Park from the North-West).

If Tioga Pass Road does not open, the Wawona Grove (about 5,000 feet in SW corner of park) can be very pretty in a little snow and there's a year-round campground there.  Hodgdon Meadow Campground (near the NW entrance into the park) is also open year-round.  Both first-come, first-served.

Statement as of 1:41 AM PST on November 19, 2009

... Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday afternoon
through Saturday afternoon for the southern Sierra Nevada from
      Yosemite to Kings Canyon ...

A Winter Storm Watch for the southern Sierra Nevada from Yosemite
to Kings Canyon remains in effect from Friday afternoon through
      Saturday afternoon.

South winds gusting to 50 mph will develop over the southern
Sierra Nevada ahead of the cold front. Rain and snow will begin
late Friday afternoon... with the heaviest precipitation Friday
evening. Snow accumulations above 5000 feet will be 4 to 7 inches
with up to a foot locally over the high country of Yosemite
      National Park.

The rain and snow will change to showers behind the cold front.
The gusty winds will turn northwest and produce considerable
blowing and drifting of snow... with local white out conditions
possible over the high country north of Kings Canyon .

      Precautionary/ preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant
snow... sleet... or ice accumulations that may impact travel.
Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.
