Last year the Forest Service said you had to have a bear canister on any of
the trailheads in from Bishop. You will need to hang your food or stealth
camp carefully until you reach the bear box stretch from Woods Creek area
south. Bishp Pass Junction is notious. Rangers are plentiful in Evolution
Valley and LeConte Cyn. Bears seem to be getting smarter as the available
menu becomes more sparse due to the use of canisters. Of course bears in
this area are generally not as bold or skilled as in Yosemite or Rae Lakes
area. IMO YMMV BHDW, Bob Richey

<< How is the bear activity around Puite Pass area.
Do I really need bear canister?
We will be a group of 9 hikers.
We did it with only hanging bags three years ago.
      Any changes since then? >>
