if you arrive in San Francisco in the evening, plan on leaving for the JMT the next morning. There are no evening amtrak trains to Yosemit and the very earliest one is at about 4:45 a.m putting you in Yosemite Valley at about 11 a.m.
The best thing to do however, unless you really want to, or your flight coincides with the 4:45 train, is to catch the 7 a.m. "train," (bus, train, bus) which will put you in the valley at about 130-2pm, giving you the rest of the afternoon to take care of whatever business you might have.
Depending on what type of stove you bring, you are best off (disagree, please!) with a white gas, MSR type stove, but you can buy canisters of fuel in the valley, T'me, REDs and you can usually find FOR FREE canisters at Vermilion and Muir TRail Ranchthey also sell them, but usually there are a variety of them dumped in the backpackers barrels. I would say your best best bet though is just white gas. No sense in hoping they have your canister in stock.
You can also, if you arrive in SF in the afternoon, head to either REI, SPORTS BASEMENT, LOMBARDI's and buy your canisters thereyou'll just have to carry them all the way.
if you need any help in SF, let me know.
