In 2012, we made a "profit" of $108.37 on the sale of the group's recognition device - the John Muir pins to attach to your packstraps or hat, or whatever.

I have donated the $108.37 in profit to the Friends of Yosemite Search & Rescue today

The Pin looks like this (though smaller):

If you are interested, instructions on how to order yours at:

      http://groups.yahoo.com/group/johnmuirtrail/files/_John%20Muir%20Pins/

If you'd also like to make a donation to Friends of YOSAR, see

      http://www.friendsofyosar.org/donate/donate.html

If you see people with these pins on the trail, please introduce yourself as another member of the Group.

And, no, you can't deduct part of your cost for the pin as a charitable contribution. I looked that up when we started the program, and we could only do that if we (the JMT Yahoo Group) had non-profit 501(c)(3) corporate status, way too complicated for the minimal benefits. The pin sales create reportable "hobby income" to me which I offset by making the donation, so that it is all a tax wash for me. Roleigh took the lead in designing the pins, Barbara K is in charge of distribution, and I handle the financial aspects.
