      Dear fellow hikers:
The Piute Indians were the Native American group that populated most of the
central and eastern sierra until late nineteenth century. Is there any modern
descendants of those original Indians? If so, do they live in reservations and
which one? I have found some information bout the history of this group
online, but so far I only got historical data from XIX Century, but very little
information of their modern whereabouts. Thank you for any info. or link that you
      can provide.
      Julio

I believe that the modern decendents of the Piutes
live on a reservation in Big Pine, CA which is located
on SR 395 about 40/50 miles south of Bishop. They
have a casino there (Piute Palace) that has the
cheapest price for gasoline in the Eastern Sierra.

The correct spelling of the tribe would be: Paiute. There is a small
reservation in Bishop along with the casino and gas station. I
believe there are also Paiute Reservations in Nevada and Utah. Do a
search for "Bishop Paiute" there are many hits. The Bishop Paiutes are
descendants of the original peoples of Owens Valley called the Nu-Mu.

          Hope this helped.
