Re: [John Muir Trail] July 6th start date - feasible?
- Kate,As of this date at 8,000 feet, you don't need snowshoes, but the Kahtoola KTS crampons would provide safety in footing if you are making early morning (6 or 7am) starts on the typically nighttime-frozen snow surface. An ice axe is important if you are making any climbs on pitches of 20 degrees and up for self-belay and self-arrest reasons, but know those skills first, otherwise having the tools means nothing for your safety.
