When you get your permit you have to tell them entry point, exit point and start date and projected exit date. You have to have a permit to spend an night

When you get your permit you have to tell them entry point, exit point and start date and projected exit date. You have to have a permit to spend an night anywhere on the trail. Reservations for summer trips are accepted from 2 days to up to 24 weeks in advance by calling 209/372-0740 (8:30 am to 4:30 am, Monday-Friday, Pacific time). I am starting Thursday from Reds, going to the portal the 3rd of Aug.

so originaly i was going to do the entire jmt starting in yosemite and
i was under the impression that one only had to get your permit
stamped whitney zone.... then decided starting from reds meadow might
be a better idea - but now the ranger is talking having a exit permit
for whitney portal. i'm doing the walkup thing at reds meadow but
ovbiously can't do that at whitney... right? does where i start
matter? if say i start at Tuolumme Meadows will i still need an exit
permit? thanks for any thoughts - Dave
