With all due respect, I think you'll find the world is no better after your
trek and getting away from the predominantly bad news whilst hiking will be
      eminently liberating.

I hiked the Trail last year and whenever hikers would gush "Have you heard
the news?", I'd say "Will it have a positive impact on my life 10-years from
now?" For the overly-persistent and un-hearing who answered "Yes", my
response was always "I doubt it."

Enjoy the wilderness. You learn things there you can't learn in the world
      of "news".

Subject: [John Muir Trail] radio freq's/stations

      Hey all,

I am hiking the trail in August and am wondering if I
should bring my FM or Shortwave radio...does anyone
know what radio reception is like in the sierra's.
i'm a news junky and so i usually take some sort of
      radio with me.

Also, I am looking for a pocket size version of Muir's
writings to take along with...anybody know of any
      suitable versions out there?
