This one has been discussed many a time and there's no doubt a file on it, but . . . if you want to leave your car in Lone Pine, I suggest "googling" and finding the phone # for Lone Pine chamber of Commerce . . .120 S Main St, Lone Pine, CA 93545
(760) 876-4444. . . where you will no doubt get to talk to a real person, who sounds like your mom and will no doubt tell you that for a small fee, you can park it there at the COC in LP.Of course you might want to get there on a weekday. Check into the Dow Villa and head on over to the COC park your car and have it waiting there for you, when you thumb down from Whitney Portal. If you want to save a few bucks and your car interior is spotless and empty of anything a bear might like to play with, you could actually drive all the way up to the portal, drop your car there and thumb back into LP, but of course you should definitely make sure it's clean and you didn't leave any empty ice chests in the back seat or your triumphant arrival in the portal will be less than pleasant. You can then catch the 6:15 a.m. morning ESTA bus on weekdays to Mammoth, make the easy switch to a YARTS bus and you'll be in the valley with 1.1 million other people, by about 1 p.m., to pick pu your permit.Lastly, if all goes well––you leave your car in LP and you finish the JMT, you can easily thumb down to LP, from the portal.BOB SHATTUCK
