As has been noted here by "targetdog" and others, the east side exit is the way to go, unless you want to spend some hefty bucks for a VVR shuttle or you want to spend a lot of time thumbing not just the 20-plus miles from either VVR or MTR, but just managing the maze of road options to get you to Fresno and beyond.

If you go as far as MTR then go out over Piute Pass, but if you want to relax or make up time, once you come down off Silver Pass, take the Mono Creek Trail and exit at Mosquito Flats Trailhead . . . then you can thumb down to 395 . . . thumb north to Mammoth or all the way back into Yosemite and of course, you've got YARTS starting in Mammoth.

If you catch the "7 a.m." YARTS out of Mammoth, you'll be able to catch the AMTRAK/YARTS bus in the valley and be back in SF around 10 p.m.

No matter where you bail, or exit on the JMT, the east side is going to be a better bet in every regard . . . easier to get to civilization, easier to thumb, and so on . . .

Two of us will be hiking from Happy Isles to the half-way point (not enough vacation to do the entire JMT). This of course will take us to the area of the MRT. What is the recommended "exit strategy"? We are flying to SFO from Baltimore and plan to take public transportation from there. There is a possibility that one more person will join us, so a rental car may be affordable if that would help us to get out of Dodge.
