What is the literary theory behind it?

Is it just looking at similarities between the four gospels or is there more?

There are two german articles that take care of listing all similarities (otto culmann I think). But since you are asking for recent studies, I am not sure you want these.

      Mark,

      I don't have any studies off-hand, but I do have a computer program. ;-)

There's a 9-word agreement ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἷς ἐξ ὑμῶν παραδώσει με at
      John 13:21 and Mark 14:48 = Matt 26:21.

      There's a 7-word agreement Ὡσαννά· Εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου
at John 12:13 and Mark 11:9 = Psalm 118:25 (LXX 117:26), but without Ὡσαννά.

There's a 6-word agreement ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων at John
      18:39 and Mark 15:9.

If you want more distinctive words, there is the 3-word agreement μύρου
νάρδου πιστικῆς at John 12:3 and Mark 14:3.

      Stephen

There's a case where Matthew is somewhat closer to John than Mark for 8
      words in order, 12 overall:

Matt 26:11 πάντοτε γὰρ τοὺς πτωχοὺς ἔχετε μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν, ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε
      ἔχετε·

John 12:8 τοὺς πτωχοὺς γὰρ πάντοτε ἔχετε μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν, ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε
      ἔχετε.

(Mark 14:7 would have been identical to Matt 26:11, except that there is
an unparalleled clause in the middle καὶ ὅταν θέλητε δύνασθε αὐτοῖς εὖ
      ποιῆσαι,)

          Good idea, Stphen!

Accordance Bible Softwar also allows users to perform an infer search
          [explores intertextulity betwee texts].

I did a search for a string of six idenical lemmas inthe same verse, in
order (plus or minus one word), betwee John and the Synptics. The result
was that 394 total verses in the Synoptis had such a phrae.

          Hee are the references:

            Good idea, Stphen!

Accordance Bible Softwar also allows users to perform an infer search
            [explores intertextulity betwee texts].

I did a search for a string of six idenical lemmas inthe same verse, in
order (plus or minus one word), betwee John and the Synptics. The result
was that 394 total verses in the Synoptis had such a phrae.

            Hee are the references:

I tried to paste the Greek text resuls in Unicode into this e-ail, but the
search highlighting did not copy over I had to use Accordance’snative
Greek ont instead, which is Helena. [A coy of it is attached to this

Hi there, Mark, an important topic, I think.

Here are some of the places I've addressed the similarities; interestingly,
none of them are identical in terms of use or exact meaning, so literary
dependence theories fall short in terms of evidence. And yet, particular
contacts or agreements between John and each of the Synoptic traditions do
present themselves, so sorting out the likely character of the connections
              is important to establish.

See 31 general agreements between John and the Synoptics, 44 memorable
sayings common to John and Mark, and 13 possible contacts between the
Johannine and Q traditions in The Fourth Gospel and the Quest for Jesus
(Part IV), and my overall theory of interfluentiality in Part III.

The two sections of John that are similar to the Synoptics are John 6 and
John 18-19. My analyses of these (confirming the overall theory) are found
in The Christology of the Fourth Gospel (chs. 5-8) and my chapter on John
18-19 in the Louvain collection on the Death of Jesus (Peeters 2007).

              Take care,

              Paul Anderson

And, here is an online essay for Bible and Interpretation outlining six
dozen cases where Luke departs with Mark and sides with John, suggesting
Lukan familiarity with (and dependence upon the oral renderings of) the
                Johannine tradition.

                http://www.bibleinterp.com/opeds/acts357920.shtml

Mark Matson and I presented papers independently on Lukan dependence upon
the Johannine tradition at the SNTS meetings last week, and the discussions
were vigorous indeed! I included the above essay as an appendix to my paper
on Authentic Worship in the Johannine and Lukan Traditions. (See also
Appendix VIII in Christology for my earlier development of this thesis.)

And, here's a report on lecturing at Marburg a year ago on A Bi-Optic
Hypothesis, which, was very well received.

                Take care,

                Paul Anderson
