First, let me apologize. What was meant to be tongue-in-cheek came out as impudent. For that I am sorry.
At the risk of digging my hole deeper...I agree that Mr OBrien has made a strong case for the connection between the two houtws.I guess I have reservations about the historical implications. I believe Dr. Moloney expressed
some similar reservations (more judiciously than I) about how to read John in his post of 5/28/99 (#62 of 1182) on this site.
Also, a relatively recent study that covers questions of the gender of BD quite well is Written That You May Believe:
Encountering Jesus in the Fourth Gospel by Sandra M. Schneiders. Sanders probes the text of John deeply to consider the possibilities without unwarranted speculation.
