The Isaac SMITH in the 1880 Bledsoe County, Tennessee is my great
grandfather, I think. He was married to Mary Jane HICKS or HIX. Their
children match up with my great Aunts and Uncles. I am guessing they either
divorced or Isaac died before the 1900 Jackson County, Cave Spring, Alabama
census. Mary Jane SMITH is listed as a widow.

Thanks for trying to help me with my road block.

Yes, she is noted as a widow in 1900, the trail leads to another Isaac
Smith, who was married to Lakey and appears in the 1850 census who I believe is
his great grandfather, Isaac looks as if he was born in 1797, with Lakey
possibly being born in 1799, and then in 1860 she appears to be born in 1808 - not
uncommon for the women of the time.

Like I said I will work on more information for you after the 1900 census -
as you know Smith are like the Jones, so many, yet so different in family
groupings. Do you know of any Hale's in your family group; it seemed they were
          everywhere around your family.

Are you sure that Mary J is a Hicks/Hix or a Davis who married a Hicks - the
funny thing about this census record is that Isaac and Lakey had a daughter
named Alexie - is this Davis wife a Smith? Look at the naming pattern; along
with the Delilah, and the Isaac B... this could be your Mary J.

I am very sure that my great grandmother was Mary Jane HICKS/HIX. She was
suppose to be part indian. My grandmother Lucinda Annie Jane SMITH COOLEY
didn't talk much about her family but she did say that her name was Mary
Jane HIX/HICKS SMITH. I find a Mary J HIX in the 1870 census living with a
Richard PAYNE family and not to many houses away is a lot of SMITHS.

Are you sure that Mary J is a Hicks/Hix or a Davis who married a Hicks - the

funny thing about this census record is that Isaac and Lakey had a daughter
named Alexie - is this Davis wife a Smith? Look at the naming pattern; along

with Richard PAYNE family BUT it is actually Richard HALE family. There is a
Lakey SMITH family age 62 and a Isaac SMITH age 32 living just three houses
away. There is several SMITHS living in that house and more SMITH in the
house next door. This is in Bledsoe County, Tn. at Robinson X Road. I am
guessing that this may be my Isaac SMITH and my Mary J. HIX. What do you
                think?

I am very sure that my great grandmother was Mary Jane HICKS/HIX. She was
suppose to be part indian. My grandmother Lucinda Annie Jane SMITH COOLEY
didn't talk much about her family but she did say that her name was Mary
Jane HIX/HICKS SMITH. I find a Mary J HIX in the 1870 census living with a
Richard PAYNE family and not to many houses away is a lot of SMITHS.

Caleb Milton showed on the 1850 census (Jackson County) as being 37.

Caleb's wife, Margaret (Widow of Drury V Womack of
Jackson County) lived on in Scottsboro after 1854 when she filed for
divorce from Caleb. There are many records of Margaret being in court
after this date, land records of selling off the land she got in the
divorce settlement of 1857 and so forth. As for Caleb's mother, we have” Malinda Browning” .
The Civil War played no part in this line except for the interruption
Of the record line caused by the Union soldiers billeted in the
courthouse in Jackson County who burned most of the available records during their
14 month stay there. The Southern sympathizers stole and hid as many
record books as they could when word reached them that the Union army
was on the way there from Huntsville. Most of what they saved were court
records and proceedings, there are no marriage, death, birth records
and very few land records of the period.

Caleb Milton Walls, who may have fled Jackson County Alabama in

1854 after having killed a neighbor at a "lady's" house there. There is no record of Caleb after that . Some say that Caleb died about 1855. Is there a way to find a record of a death for this time period in Jackson County? Any ideas would be appreciated. Does anyone recognize the Womack or Browning names?

                  Thank you so much

                  Paula
