Guess Creek more than likely was named for an early Guess in Jackson Co.
The only one that appears on the census is Thomas Guess on the 1830. He is
indexed as Td Guess. Doesn't indicate where in the county he lived. No other
Guess on the census until 1880.

      Hello,
Don't know if this has any bearing on the above discussion, but there was a
Jonathan GUESS who m. Mary Crownover (Mary Crownover is the daughter of my
ancestor, Theodore Crownover) around 1828 or so. It is believed the Crabree,
Crownover and Guess families moved to Jackson County AL. from TN., just after
1830. If memory serves, The "Guess" name was mispelled on the 1840 census.
      Brenda

From the book, The Stevenson Story, by Eliza B. Woodall (found in the
Bridgeport Museum), page 79 is the following: account:
"Theodore Crovnover and wife Martha (Crabtree) who had travelled from South
Carolina along with Theodore's father, Joseph, and Martha's brother, William
Crabtree, first to Calfkiller Valley in White County, Tennessee, then to Crow
Creek, left their relatives on Crow Creek and headed for Sand Mountain, well
past Ider. Two of Martha's nephews, sons of William Crabtree, took their
famiies to the same neighborhood. Walnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery on
Highway 117 is full of Crabtrees who were born on Crow Creek.

Johnathan Guess, born on Crow Creek,(TN.) went along with the
Crownover-Crabtree entourage as Jonathan had married Mary Crownover, daughter of Theodore
      and Martha".

The three places are in different parts of the county.

Crow Creek is in the center of the county, Sand Mtn eastern part and the Paint Rock Valley where Guess Creek is located is in the western part of the county.

Sand Mountain was not settled until after 1836 when the Cherokee were removed.

I used soundex searching for Guess only 1 listed in 1830 no others until 1880.

There is a John M. Gasque and Martha Gasque listed on the 1870.

About that Guess family. My daughters are the grand daughters of Thomas
Edward Guess and <living McCrary>. I have followed their line back a bit and I
ran into the spelling of the name changing Guess>Guest>Gist. Anyone else out
there have info on this line from the Stevenson-Bridgeport area? Thomas
Edward Guess was the son of George Foster Guess born 18 Oct 1906 died Jan
1977 and Girthel Mae Howell, born 18 Aug 1908 died 12 Jul 1999. George Foster
Guess was the son of Mayburn b. 1857<?> Guess who was the son of Richard
Gist<?>. Can someone tell me if I'm heading in the proper direction or am I

You need to talk to Brenda as this is your line. Jonathan Guess who married Mary Crownover was father of Mayburn/ Maburn Guess father of George Foster Guess. (Maburn Alfred Guess full name).

            Will post 1840, 50, 60, 80, 1900, 20, 30 census data tomorrow and whatever marriages I find.

Jonathan Guess moved to that part of Sand Mountain in Dekalb Co. listed there in 1840, 50, 60 so far.
