They asked whoever was at home for the info and if no one was they usually asked the neighbors this is why you can get some widely varying answers from census to census.  It looks like in the case they didn't.

      > I noticed there are several blanks on the 1870 Census, specifically for District 5 Subdivision 1, Jackson County with the note "gone to the mountain for the summer". Was there any attempt to go back and count or list tose that were gone to the mountain in July/Aug 1870 when the census was done. I think this explains why I can't find my GGF/GF on the 1870 census.
