JCHA MEETING on SUNDAY, APRIL 25, 2010, 2:00 p.m., Scottsboro Public Library meeting room
- JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION WILL MEET SUNDAY, APRIL 25, 2010
The Jackson County Historical Association will meet Sunday, April 25,
2010, 2:00 p.m., in the Scottsboro Public Library meeting room. JCHA
Program Vice-President Kelly Goodowens is pleased to announce that Dr.
Pete Sparks, a dentist who practices in Grant, Alabama, will be the
guest speaker. Dr. Sparks is one of Alabama's most knowledgeable Civil
War scholars. His talk will cover Brigadier General Hylan B. Lyon's
war-time expedition from Kentucky to Alabama. The highlight will be the
armed skirmish at the Scottsboro Freight Depot in January 1865 and the
subsequent burning of Guntersville. The public is invited to enjoy
this timely and interesting documented story of the last Civil War
skirmish in Jackson County. JCHA member Dr. Sam Holland stated that he
doubts anyone can ask a reasonable Civil War question that Dr. Sparks
can not answer. Refreshments will be served after the program.
Jackson County Historical Association member Dr. Ronald H. Dykes' third
book relative to Jackson County, Alabama, will soon be available for
purchase. Dr. Dykes dedicated BUILDING BRIDGES AND ROADS IN THE KOREAN
CONFLICT: HISTORY OF COMPANY B, FROM SCOTTSBORO, ALABAMA, DURING THE
"FORGOTTEN WAR" to all the "unsung veterans of the Korean Conflict" .
He included a brief history of the Korean Conflict, a detailed history
of Company B, and his interviews with fifteen of Scottsboro's "unsung
heroes". Their memories constitute the heart of the book. Once again,
Dr. Dykes has allowed the JCHA to be his co-publisher, and the JCHA will
receive half the proceeds from the book sales.
Dr. Dykes will be the program speaker for the July meeting of the JCHA,
and his latest book will be available for purchase at that time.
