While Tofurky may sound like a dirty word to some, to others it's a
holiday staple like cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes.

More than 200 people celebrated the faux-turkey product at the Fourth
Annual Tofurky Feed with free food, information about animal rights
and recipes for healthy alternatives to holiday dishes at Selvester's
      Café-by-the-Creek on Nov. 18.

Students and staff walked away with heaping plates of mashed potatoes,
cornbread and stuffing along with the main dish -- Tofurky topped off
      with gravy.

Shaina Abell, an intern at Farm Sanctuary in Orland, handed out
pamphlets for the organization, which provides a safe haven for
animals that would otherwise be headed to the slaughter.

The organization accepts donations, and for Thanksgiving they asked
area residents to save a turkey by donating $20.

Every Thanksgiving, 45 million turkeys are killed for food, Abell said.

"Thanksgiving doesn't have to be about turkey," she said.
