(US-ca/fl) Suit against Atkins to proceed
- Man says following low-carb diet by eating large amounts of pastrami,
cheesecake damaged arteries.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A lawsuit filed by a man who claims the
low-carbohydrate Atkins diet caused him severe heart disease may
proceed in Florida, a county judge ruled this week.
Jody Gorran, 53, claims his arteries became blocked from following the
Atkins diet and "eating large amounts of pastrami and cheesecake" for
more than two years, according to court papers.
Palm Beach County Court Judge Susan Lubitz denied defendant Atkins
Nutritionals Inc.'s motion to dismiss the suit, which was filed in May
by Gorran, of Delray Beach, Fla.
The suit seeks about $15,000 in damages, which will be donated to
charity if it succeeds, according to Dan Kinburn, senior counsel for
the vegan advocacy group funding the suit, the Physicians Committee
for Responsible Medicine.
