For the past 33 years, Monday has been the busiest day of the week at the
      Tirecraft shop in Nanton.

New tire sales, rotations, flat repairs, oil changes, muffler replacements
and service calls dominated shop owner Terry Atkinson's day.

But last Monday - and like many days of late - Atkinson found himself with
little work to do as the economic fallout of the mad cow crisis spills out
of the agricultural sector and into town.
      ...
The question of when the U.S. border will reopen to imports of live
Canadian cattle, combined with worries of what's to come if more cases of
BSE are found, has cashstrapped ranchers putting all but the most
      essential purchases on hold.

Business is so bad the Municipal District of Willow Creek, which borders
the towns of Nanton and Claresholm, declared itself an economic disaster
Feb. 19 due to the BSE crisis.

To date, 36 of Alberta's 68 rural municipalities have declared themselves
economic disasters due to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad
      cow disease.
