- For a number of reasons your child or teen may have announced that he
or she has decided to be a vegetarian eater. This can be a really
healthy decision, with an eating pattern full of nutritious,
plant-based, less-processed foods, or it can be a diet low in some
The definition of vegetarian eating can vary from one individual to
another. Some mean they are eating only plant-based foods. Others may
also include options such as eggs, dairy products, or fish. Some are
really only eliminating red meat products.
The choice to be a vegetarian eater can be prompted by concern for
animals or the environment, it can be a taste preference, a desire to
eat more basic foods for health reasons, because of peer influences,
to counter a family history of certain health concerns, or for a
number of other reasons. When taken to extreme, however, such as when
a number of healthy foods are eliminated, or if it is a guise for an
eating disorder, vegetarian eating can also be a health concern.
