THRISSUR: In most schools, a child's lunch consists of chicken and
snack box is filled with jalebis or cake. But such items are
completely banned in Devamatha CMI Public School as the school insists
that the children should bring vegetarian lunch and simple snacks.

So for lunch they can no more get their favourite beef curry or
chicken roast, but only a vegetarian meal. For snacks, they can only
bring items like peanuts, biscuits or muruku. And if any student
violates the norm, then parents are called and told to follow the
      school's scheme.

The decision to go vegetarian and insist on simple but nutritious
snacks was taken by the school authorities after they found that more
than 40% of the students were bringing non-vegetarian food to school.
The problem of obesity among children was on the rise. School
authorities took a hard stance when two 10-year-old's were found to
have diabetes during a health check-up at school," said school
      authorities.
