(US-ca) Jailed Chino slaughterhouse ex-employee says abusive tactics ordered by a superior
- If workers at the Westland/Hallmark Meat Co., mostly illegal
immigrants, had refused orders to shock, drag or otherwise force sick
and injured cows to slaughter, their bosses would have fired them, a
former employee now charged with animal cruelty said Friday.
"You feel bad, but this is your job," Rafael Sanchez Herrera, 34, of
Chino, said in Spanish in an interview from the Adelanto Detention
Center. "They give you orders and you have to do it."
An undercover Humane Society investigator secretly videotaped workers
at the Chino plant trying to force collapsed cows into the
slaughtering pen. In one case a worker slammed a cow with a forklift
and in other instances, workers jabbed the animals with electric
cattle prods and paddles to the face.
