(US-ny) Foie Gra plant is target of lawsuit
- Ferndale - The Humane Society of the United States is planning to take
its fight against a local foie gras farm to federal court.
The Humane Society yesterday filed a notice of intent to sue Hudson
Valley Foie Gras , which is located in Ferndale, claiming the farm has
committed more than 900 violations of the federal Clean Water Act.
No one from Hudson Valley Foie Gras returned a call for comment yesterday.
The lawsuit, if filed, would be the next move in a strategic game to
put the farm out of business.
Most recently, the organization criticized the state for awarding the
farm up to $420,000 to help cover some costs of expansion and to
assure the retention of 150 jobs on the farm - one of only three foie
gras producers in the country and the largest agricultural company in
"It's inexcusable for the state to be funding a facility that not only
cruelly force-feeds animals, but also flouts federal and state
environmental laws," said Jon Lovvorn, vice president for animal
protection litigation for the Humane Society.
