10314(CA) Fund-raiser showcases local produce
- May 1, 2006Last year about this time, hundreds sat at linen-clad tables under the
stars and dined on purple potato-stuffed flatbread and spiced
meatballs served with a fava bean puree.
Tiny savory pies made with local ingredients floated from hand to
mouth. Guests sipped wine featuring Brentwood- and Oakley-grown
grapes. A good time was had by all.
It's fitting, say organizers of the Brentwood Agricultural Land Trust
annual fund-raiser, to have the event outdoors on the very soil that
yields the area's succulent fruits and vegetables. The formal,
$150-a-person celebration is for people who support the agricultural
culture here. And it's for people who are passionate about food.
Each year, chefs from around the Bay Area, some quite famous, descend
on the area to serve a five-course, 12-plate meal made with locally
grown ingredients. And though the menu isn't quite ready for this
year's event, planned for May 20, organizers are already expecting
some 300 people. Tickets are selling like home-made hot cakes.
"Last year, we had all these meat-eaters and they were just dying over
this vegan stuff," said local farmer Kristie Knoll, one of the event's
