5TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND 1ST NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INTERPRETING & TRANSLATING IN PUBLIC SERVICES The Department of Modern Philology at the University
    Message 1 of 1 , Jul 15, 2001
      5TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND

1ST NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INTERPRETING & TRANSLATING IN PUBLIC SERVICES

The Department of Modern Philology at the University of Alcalá, Spain is pleased to inform you about the Fifth International Conference on Translation and the First Conference on Interpreting and Translating in Public Services (also Community Interpreting) to be held in Alcalá, Madrid on the 22nd and 23rd of February 2002.

With this event, our institution aims to provide a debate forum for intellectuals and professional interpreters/translators as well as for students and anyone interested in the new socio-cultural reality that is developing in most of the UE countries.

The rapid increase of immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers opens new questions on intercultural communication and suggests the need to develop some initiatives to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers. These initiatives show a great variety of solutions to the different settings in which interpreters and/or translators are needed. Such a variety of possibilities also leads us to question the ethics of translation and interpreting in public services, the acceptance of the varied forms of professionalism, the importance of the role that culture plays, the standardisation of interpreting training and recruitment, and the consideration of the different attitudes from the society and its institutions. Questions such as these will be the main focus of the Conference.

The event is specially addressed to participants in interpreting organisations, academic institutions aimed at setting vocational qualifications for interpreting and translating in public services, NGAs working with immigration and ethnic minorities, local and national government agencies, health organisations, those training as interpreters and other public sectors interested in multiculturalism.

The two-day Conference will host plenary lectures, papers and panel discussions. 30-minute papers (including discussion time) are invited on any aspect related to the topic of the Conference. Special emphasis should be made on the complex role of the interlinguistic mediator in public services, its connections with court interpreting as well as interpreting in the context of education and health. Discussion on the standardisation of interpreter training and recruitment in the UE, and the future of community interpreting and translation in Spain may be included.

This is the first time that organisations and individuals involved in interpreting and translating in Public Services in Spain have had the opportunity to meet and exchange experiences with colleagues working in similar areas from across Europe. So, if you are interested, don´t miss this chance.
