'Training the Language Services Provider for the New Millennium'
First Circular and Call for Papers

Faculdade de Letras, Universidade do Porto, Portugal.

This conference, which will follow the annual meeting of the 'Dublin
Network' (a former ICP involving about 30 translator and interpreter
training institutions in Europe), will focus the problem of preparing people
to work in the real world of the professional linguist, a multi-faceted
environment in which an ever wider variety of language, translation and
      interpreting skills are required.

Experience shows that this training also needs to be supplemented by skills
in areas like information technology, translation software, terminology
management, and localization, as well as in general document management and
      text production.

Experience also shows that no amount of technical skills will solve the
problem of lack of cultural knowledge. In a world in which globalization and
internationalization of interests is accompanied by concern for preserving
national cultures and sub-cultures, there is also a need to develop the
students' knowledge of both international and intercultural issues in a way
which goes beyond the scope of the more traditional modern language
curricula from which many courses in translation, interpreting and applied
      languages have developed.

Every professional linguist also recognizes the need to be able to cope in a
wide variety of situations that often require knowledge of special subjects.
However, opinions on how to train people for this aspect of the real world
vary considerably, and this is reflected in the curricula of the training
      institutions responsible.

We therefore invite people from both academia and the world of professional
translation, interpreting and other language services to participate with
papers, workshops and posters that will focus curriculum development in the
training of the language services provider in the new millennium.

Note: During 2001 Porto will be one of the European Cities of Culture, so we
hope you will also be able to enjoy the programme of cultural events
