Subject: Pacific Mozart Ensemble sings Rumi/Zoufonoun

      Dear Friend,

Rumi Lynne Morrow, conductor of the Pacific Mozart Ensemble, has entered into an exciting collaboration with Persian composer, Omid Zoufonoun. Taking inspiration from four Rumi poems, Zoufonoun's composition weaves traditional Persian lyrics and melodies with Western choral harmony, accompanied by the ney, santur, tombak, and daf.

The instrumentalists accompanying the 40-piece choir include Shahab Paranj and Hamid Reza Taghavi of the Shams Ensemble, an awe-inspiring ensemble that specializes in traditional Sufi and classical Iranian music.

With Rumi's haunting lyrics sung in the original Farsi, the work contains spiritually and culturally relevant themes of cultural identity, and the universality of the human experience. This project demonstrates the value of a genuine inter-cultural dialogue at a time when tensions between Iran and the West are running high.

Omid Zoufonoun is a composer and musician whose recent symphonic work, Manteq at-Tayr, was performed by the Oakland East Bay Symphony to an audience of 2500 at the Paramount Theater. He is also the son of master Persian musician Mahmoud Zoufonoun, founder of the Zoufonoun Ensemble of which Omid is a member.

Dr. Lynne Morrow currently serves as the Music Director of two renowned choruses in the Bay Area, the Oakland Symphony Chorus and Pacific Mozart Ensemble. For her direction of PME, she received a Grammy nomination in 2005 for their recording of Leonard Bernstein's Mass with Kent Nagano in Berlin. In 2010, their long-time collaboration with Dave Brubeck (including many world premieres) led to the release of "Dave Brubeck: Songs of Praise" with Dorian Recordings.

Don't miss this chance to experience this unusual and beautiful work. The concert will also include the contemporary-sounding and ethereal harmonies of
      Carlo Gesualdo and Palestrina.
