Help Congressional Action for Humanitarian Aid to Gaza
- URGENT - ACT NOW FOR HUMANITARIAN AID TO GAZA
Washington, DC | January 26, 2009 | http://www.adc.org | The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) urges you to immediately, without delay, contact your members of Congress to ask them to sign onto a Congressional letter, originating from the office of Congressman John W. Olver’s (D-MA), which asks for humanitarian aid and emergency relief to be sent to Gaza. The letter, which can be read at: http://www.adc.org/PDF/hillettergaza.pdf will be sent to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton soon, hence the urgency of this action alert request.
It has already been endorsed by Congressman David Price (D-NC), Congressman Lois Capps (D-CA), Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN), Congressman Sam Farr (D-CA), Congressman Maurice Hin-chey (D-NY), Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA), Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA), Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Congressman James McGovern (D-MA), and Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-WI).
To be certain that your efforts have maximum impact, ADC asks that in addition to sending an email to your members of Congress that you also call their offices to follow up on the email. You can find contact information for your representatives by entering your zip code here (http://capwiz.com/adc/dbq/officials/). This will take you an average of seven minutes to complete.
The letter requests that the State Department release emergency funds to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) for reconstruction and humanitarian assistance noting that the State Department could make these funds available through the Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance (ERMA). It also asks for the State Department to share actions that have been and will be taken to address this humanitarian crisis within 14 days.
Noting the very dire situation in Gaza, the letter asks for not only food and medicine for the people of Gaza, but also to allow for the critically injured to be permitted to travel into the West Bank, Israel, and Jordan to receive adequate medical care. Currently the hospitals in Gaza lack supplies, are understaffed, and unable to treat the more than 1,000 persons who were recently wounded or maimed in the Israeli attacks on Gaza. To address the psychological trauma the people of Gaza endured in the recent Israeli attacks, the letter asks for the US to make certain funds are available for mental health services in Gaza. Additionally, it also asks for the Karni Crossing to be reopened to allow for materials and fuel to be allowed into Gaza.
