Iraq War Ownership Ceremony: Baron Hill Now Owns the War

Presentation of Iraq War Certificate of Ownership to 9th District Representative Baron Hill

Bloomington, Indiana --  On Monday, April 2nd, members of Bloomington Peace Action Coalition and Bloomington Declaration of Peace will present a Certificate of Ownership for the Iraq War to 9th District Representative Baron Hill at his Bloomington office.

On March 23rd, Baron Hill voted to appropriate another nearly $100 billion for the continuation of the illegal U.S. occupation of the country of Iraq.

After the November elections, voters all over the U.S. were expecting the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate to use their power to bring the occupation of Iraq to an end.

Instead, by voting YES on the supplemental defense appropriations bill (Iraq Accountability Act), and YES on House Speaker Nancy Pelosis amendment, the Democratic majority, including Baron Hill, has decided to prolong the U.S. occupation of Iraq, and very likely to prolong it for an indefinite period of time.

While the Iraq Accountability Act (HR 1591) has been portrayed as a measure to end the war, at the latest by August 2008, the provisions in this bill by no means guarantee an end to the U.S. occupation by that date.

With his YES vote, Baron Hill disregarded the will of the American voters, and of the people who voted for him in Indianas 9th District.

Therefore, Baron Hill, and the Democratic majority in the House and Senate, now co-own the Iraq war with President George W. Bush and his cabinet. They have said YES to the continuation of this occupation, when they had the opportunity to put an end to it by refusing to appropriate any more money for it.

Anti-war organizer Timothy Baer explains why Bloomington Peace Action Coalition and Bloomington Declaration of Peace will make the presentation of the Iraq War Certificate of Ownership on Monday.

Baer states, In 2002, Congressman Hill voted to "authorize" the illegal invasion of Iraq. Since then, he has repeatedly stated that he was lied to about the invasion justifications and therefore voted based on the belief in those lies, despite the fact that we were lobbying him prior to the invasion. We were telling him that there were no useable WMDs in Iraq and there were no Iraqi connections to the September 11th attacks.  In 2003 and 2004, Hill voted to sustain an immoral military occupation by approving ongoing funding for the U.S. war on Iraq. Now, in 2007, when he had the opportunity to begin to end this devastating war, Congressman Hill has agreed to perpetuate the lie -- to perpetuate the illegal occupation of Iraq. Baron Hill has voted for more war funding. He now owns this war and occupation. He and the other 217 members of Congress who voted for more war funding are responsible for all those who have been, and will be, killed and injured and violated because of the U.S. occupation of Iraq. We want to make it clear with this Certificate of Ownership that we hold Baron Hill and his fellow war-perpetuators responsible.

A solemn presentation of the Iraq War Certificate of Ownership and a reading of the names of Iraq War victims -- including Hoosier soldiers -- will take place at Congressman Baron Hills Bloomington office, Suite 114 in the Showers Building, N. Morton Street, Bloomington, at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 2, 2007.
