Subject: Immigration ReformThis is alert comes from the ICC, the USCCB and Farmworkers Justice. The immigration reform debate hasbegun. Both Senators Lugar and Bayh have been with the USCCB position thus far in their votes on the first couple of amendments. We need to thank them for their support of the compromise, Hegel/Martinez bill, S. 2611. Urge them to support AgJOBS ( which is included in S. 2611 ) and oppose the Chambliss Amendments which would remove the earned legalization component to AgJOBS and remove the wage protections from H2A guest workers ( basically paying the "prevailing wage" and using George as a model where there is no minimum wage for farmworkers ).This debate will go on into the middle of next week with about 30 amendments being offered. What ever bill passes the Senate, a Conference committee with the House will be the next step. There is a reasonable chance that Sen.Lugar may be on that committee. Please call or email Senators Lugar and Bayh. There will be more alerts. This is important for us. Its a justice issue and important to us here with our commitment to migrant ministry.Senator Richard G.
