Maruthi Suzuki incident

A discussion organized by

2nd sept 2012, 2.30 pm, Darus Salam building, Queens road,
near cantonment railway station, Bangalore
In the recent past Maruti Suzuki has been in the news a lot. The corporates of India made a big noise that the ‘years of trade union militancy’ is back and it has to be curbed at any cost. But what is the reality? Who are the real culprits?
Years back the company bought 3000 acres of land in Manesar, Gurgaon on which they built a manufacturing plant. The farmers who sold their lands, at very low rates - because of promises made by the company, that they would all have jobs in the factory. However, the company has now hired workers through a contractor and has left the farmers in the lurch.
The contract employees themselves are on very low wages and even basic facilities were not provided. They have not spoken out so far believing their jobs would become permanent someday. Today, years later, they have come together to form a union and fight for their rights.
The Haryana government has been hand-in-glove with the Maruti Suzuki company and therefore, did not allow the contract workers' union to form. The company, backed by the Haryana government, targeted the employees who were voicing their concerns and have formed a union in favour of the company. Today, in a dire state, this union is also protesting against the company. Recently, many incidents have lead to the death of one manager, and hundreds of employees being arrested leaving their families hungry.
In the light of all these events, there is a need to discuss the issue in detail. Not just the workers, but all the democratic minded people of this country have to join this discussion and struggle for justice.
Com.Balan and Com.K.S.Sharma Senior labour leaders will speak on the occasion.
Please do attend the programme.--
