Group Description

This electronic discussion group is designed for the sharing of genealogy research, and family history and lore, on Yorker and New Jersey families that pioneered the tricounty area of northwest Decatur, southwest Rush, and east central Shelby Counties, IN ca. 1820, when the area opened for settlement after the signing of the St. Mary's Treaty of 1816. Many of these families stopped first, and/or had relatives, in Franklin or Dearborn Counties, IN or Hamilton, Warren, Preble or other counties in southwest Ohio. Many settled west of St. Omer in Decatur County, and also around Middletown (Waldron) in Shelby County, and along the common border of Decatur, Rush and Shelby, inside Shelby County.

Many migrated directly from the Finger Lakes of Ontario, Yates and Steuben Counties, NY. Some were earlier from Orange Co., NY, northern NJ, and even Long Island and CT. Some had relatives who settled in Knox County, IN, an area that covered southern Indiana, a generation earlier. Many were Dutch and many traced back to colonial New England, and shared history in common with the settlers near Oldenburg, Trenton, and Blooming Grove in Franklin Co., IN, and also Union County, IN. These families originated some of the old cemeteries in the area.

There was much kinship and intermarriage between them. It is hoped that as researchers find this group, and share information, many researchers might learn new community family lore and history on their ancestors.

Librarians, historians and genealogists in the area, with an interest in this topic, have been invited, and encouraged to monitor this discussion group.

Information on cemeteries, literacy, and home building is sought in order to expand on the general knowledge of the settlement. Sharing from primary evidence such as old letters would be helpful.
