April 6th Press Briefing: American Delegation Returns from Iraq
April 4, 2001, For Immediate Release
WHAT: AMERICAN DELEGATION RETURNS FROM FACT-FINDING MISSION TO IRAQ:
Special Press Briefing
WHEN: FRIDAY, APRIL 6, 2001, 10:00 AM
WHERE: NATIONAL PRESS CLUB, ZENGER ROOM
529 14th Street, NW, 13th Floor
In the midst of a Bush Administration debate between moderates calling for
"easing sanctions" and hardliners demanding "regime change" and tighter
sanctions, a delegation of American Muslims and American-Arabs traveled to
Iraq to witness firsthand the effects of the sanctions on the Iraqi people.
Ten years ago this week, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 687, which
reinstated sanctions against Iraq following the Gulf War. Ten years of UN
sanctions have killed more than 1.5 million Iraqis. As designed, the blockade
has devastated Iraq, destroyed much of its infrastructure and civilian
economy, and set Iraq back many decades.
The Iraq policy debate must take into account the human suffering that is a
direct result of the sanctions regime. The delegation's findings will shed
light on the humanitarian situation in Iraq today.
[The delegation included representatives of the following organizations:
American-Arab Anti Discrimination Committee, American Muslim Council,
American Muslims for Global Peace and Justice, LIFE for Relief and
Development, Muslim American Society, Muslim Public Affairs Council, Muslim
Students Association of the U.S. and Canada; and Muslim Students
