Commerical Plane en Route From Tel Aviv Crashes Into Black Sea
Oct. 4 A Russian commercial passenger plane bound from Tel Aviv to the
Siberian city of Novosibirsk crashed into the Black Sea today, Russian
Siberian Airlines Flight SB 1812 left Tel Aviv at 9.15 a.m. local time and
was about two hours into its journey when it plunged into the Black Sea
about 114 miles off the Russian coastal city of Adler.
According to Russian news service Interfax, 76 people were on board.
After takeoff from Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport, traffic
controllers in Rostov, a city in southern Russia, noticed that Flight SB
1812 had disappeared off their radar screens. The air traffic controllers
in Rostov immediately contacted all aircraft in the region asking for
possible sightings or unusual events.
According to Interfax, a captain of an Armenian-owned An-24 turbo-prop
plane in the region replied, and said he had seen "an exploding plane" on
his port side, and that debris was falling into the Black Sea. The report
has not been confirmed.
Interfax has reported that Russian security service sources are focusing
their initial investigation on "an explosion which happened onboard the
Russian President Vladimir Putin has launched an investigation into the
causes of the crash, Russian media reported.
