Please, everyone do me one favor. Please just go to my website and look at
the flash presentation, or the html pages describing the plans. I
completely understand why you would say this, John, and I said the same
thing. Because I had a friend whom I trust and who sincerely wanted me to
look into PPL, I finally caved and checked it out. When I did I realized
that as a PI I would be nuts not to offer this as an additional service to
my clients. The thing is, John, that you haven't seen the description of
the product, so you're operating on what you guess is in the plan, or what
you've heard on the rumor line.
Actually, this question of legal specialty is one of our big selling points.
Many people say "Oh, I have a friend/client/relative who's an attorney, I
don't need PPL." The standard comeback is "Really? And what is her
specialty? And where does she practice? Personal Injury, you say? In Los
Angeles? And how much help will she be when you need a Will drawn, or
advice on a contract, Probate matter, or family law matter? What if you go
on vacation to Florida and have an accident, or get a traffic ticket? Can
she help you then?"
With PPL you get to consult with a specialist in whatever area of law you
need, in any state in the US, and most of Canada. If they don't have what
you need, which they usually do, or if their conflict check shows they need
to pass on your case, they will hire outside counsel to handle it. One of
my PI Associates had a matter that required an unusual specialist, I don't
recall now what it was. They found her someone she was very pleased with.
I called and got an attorney in TN who specialized in property issues when
my Dad had a neighbor's tree falling on his house. When I had a CA client's
ex abscond to FL with her new car, I had FOUR attorneys advise me, a pair in
FL & a pair in CA, one each on the divorce/property issues and one each on
the repo angle. Actually my direct client was an attorney, and he was most
impressed when I informed him that I understood that his responsibility was
to his client, not me, and I wished to consult my own attorneys before
proceeding. When he found out I have a TEAM, he offered me all his work.
Understand, I only had the $17 a month plan at the time. The consultations
cost me nothing beyond that.
Btw, as I'm typing this on a Sunday, I just got a call from another PI
Associate who has the membership. He's in trouble, and didn't have his law
firm's number. He also has the Legal Shield rider on his plan. He can call
an 800 number 24/7 and get a real, live attorney on the phone within a few
minutes. That attorney will advise him, talk to any cops on the scene, do
whatever they can to defuse the situation and keep him out of jail or
danger. In our line of work, this sort of situation is a very real
possibility. Of course for the 24/7 service he's paying a premium
price...$1 a month.

Subject: [infoguys-list] Prepaid Legal Services
I think Bill's comments regarding prepaid legal services are very cogent.
He isn't trying to stone anyone for making a little cash selling the plans,
he's trying to alert potential users to the real problems that exist when
you rely on these plans for legal defense.
In real life, when you need a lawyer, you don't need some generalist who
will write a few letters or make a few blustery calls... you need someone
who is an expert in a particular field, and I have yet to see anything in
any of these prepaid legal plans that guarantee the client that they will
pay for expert outside counsel - that is someone who knows how to litigate a
specific issue (constitutional tort, copyright infringement, etc).
Listen to Bill's advice, he never speaks unless he has something to say
(like Mr. Ed).
