UK LICENSING OF PI'S

As you may be aware, the PI Profession is in the process of being regulated
throughout the UK and the Irish Republic,
The UK consists of a number of Jurisdictions, and the first to have enacted
a Law to regulate the Security Industry, which includes the PI Sector is
England & Wales.
The new law sets up an Independent Body (SIA) Security Industry Authority
which has the responsibility of implementing the Law.
One of the first tasks of the SIA is the creating of Criteria for each of
the numerous Disciplines/Sectors within the Security Industry. It is
expected that the PI Sector will not be required to register until 2003 to
However, whilst this would appear to be a very domestic issue, it will
interest Non England & Wales based PI's to know that if you are minded to
visit here for the purpose of conducting investigations (defined in the Law
as any surveillance, inquiries or investigations carried out for the purpose
of a) obtaining information about, activities of or whereabouts of a
particular person or b) obtaining information about the circumstances in
which or means by which property has been lost or
damaged - Note: that Corporate Entities appear to have been omitted!!)
YOU WILL REQUIRE A LOCAL LICENSE !!
A residential status is not required to obtain a License.
Any PI from anywhere will be able to apply for a License provided the
Criteria, once published, are met.
