      COURSE TITLE: "The Art of Investigations"

      COURSE DESCRIPTION: Do you love a good mystery? Well, here's your
      chance to experience the real thing. You become the detective -
      investigate current, unsolved cases and unravel the mystery. Learn
      the methodology behind the investigation: research the case, develop
      a plan of action and learn investigative techniques from 28-year,
      First Grade, NYC Detective, Gil Alba.

      48 HOURS-TV SHOW with Dan Rather will show the Kristine Kupka Case
      sometime in September of 2000. The Kupka case is one of the two cases
      students will study.

      Course Outline
      By Private Investigator Gil Alba
      Session #1:
      Witness a hypothetical crime in progress . . . students to talk about
      their observations.
      ü Overview of current, unsolved cases the class will be
      investigating.
      Video interviews (5 minutes) of victims' sister's of two real on
      going pre-meditated . . . murder cases.
      ü Competition-Class will be split in half- each group will have
      their own case.

      Session #2:
      Mini Lesson – How to Develop a Plan of Action: The Components of
      an Investigation.
      ü Small Group Work – collaborate with group to delineate a
      plan of action.

      Session #3:
      Mini Lesson – Interviewing Techniques:Interrogative and
      Informative
      ü Small Group Work – develop interviewing role-play
      ü Student-Centered Large Group Activity – Present role-plays
      ü View videotapes of TV Shows depicting the two cases & study
      interviewing techniques.
      Homework: Interaction with law enforcement official and research
      other similar cases.

      Session #4:
      Special Quest-Speaking about Psychics-PhD Joanne McManus:
      Parapsychological Consultant: Wrote Book-"Shopping for Miracles." Are
      Psychics really needed?
      ü Burden of Proof - Small Group Work – Outline a plan for
      gathering evidence.

      Session #5:
      Special Guest: Kathy Kupka: Driving force behind the investigation of
      her sister, Kristine's disappearance.
      ü Presentation – Each group to present their findings. Let's
      see which group wins.
