President Clinton vetoed the Marriage Penalty Tax Relief bill on
He said on the NBC News Saturday evening that the Republicans are
trying to use up the surplus by giving tax relief of trillions of
dollars to the American people. Do Clinton and Gore talk to each
other? Gore stated in a press release in June that he was in favor
of marriage penalty tax relief!
The current tax code for married couples states that if you are
married and both work and produce income, then your combined income
is taxed as one. This most often pushes couples into the next higher
tax bracket. If you are married and only one spouse works and
produces income, then you get a deduction.
So if you produce, you get taxed at the higher rate. If you
produce, you get taxed less.
