      Thanks to all who responded. Great list. The County Registrar -
      Recorder/County Clerk is the custodian of birth, death and marriage records
      as well as other pertinent filings in California. Below is the link to the
      Los Angeles County website which seems to be a simple process as long as you
      have the listed permissible purpose to obtain the record. Just can't figure
      out how the person named on the death certificate could be the requestor. J
