      From a recent NY Times (25 Sept) article:

      Finance ministers once expected that their meetings would be overshadowed by anti-globalization protests. So far, those protests have proven mostly peaceful and far smaller than anticipated. But the high price of oil and the falling euro — what the ministers have called twin threats to the global economy — have overtaken the agenda. The big test will come Monday, when markets reopen and traders vote on whether official promises to corral prices are credible.
      As often is the case, the language of such "publications of record" provides insights. In today's world, t's traders who vote, not citizens, and they vote via the market, not democracy. These are the voters & votes that matter, the ones governments respond to most readily. Ordinary citizens have to get out into the streets to be heard.
