In "Dateline Bangkok" -- Villagers should end dam protest -- the Daily News opines that:

The administration of Chuan Leekpai has made a concession and it is  now the protesters' turn to seek a peaceful way to end their protest at Pak Moon Dam.
What is this gesture? Merely setting up a committee!

When Thai politicians are asked about a problem, they frequently respond that they "are working on it," which usually means there will be a meeting or some new committee will be formed. To me, this is practically meaningless. A solution must actually does do something to change a situation. Why does the population so easily accept that more talk -- often empty -- is a solution?

With some issues that I have followed, the famous committees almost never meet. Far too often, they turn out to be yet another delaying tactic of the powers that be, represented by the government. The same with most "studies," which are often incompetent, if not openly biased. Does "neutral" mean that half of the committee will be genuine representatives of the people?

The villagers will be correct if they do not follow the Daily News' silly advice. The protesters should wait for concrete improvement in their desperate situation. Empty promises, more talk, and meetings behind closed doors will not improve their lives.

                             Be cool ;-)
