      Panukat ng Katalinuhang Pilipino (PKP)

      Panukat ng Katalinuhang Pilipino (PKP) was developed to validate the mental ability of Filipino adults, on the basis of his verbal and non-verbal skills. The author of the test is Aurora R. Palacio, Ed.D. It was published by MAVEC Specialists Foundation, Incorporation. The administration of the tests will take 52 minutes. Purchasing the test will cost Php11, 200 per set.

      PKP attempts to measure 4 major factors of human intelligence. These are word facilitator, analytical thinking, problem solving and abstract reasoning. All requires language skills except for the abstract reasoning. On the basis of these constructs of human intelligence, there are 4 subtests that were chosen to compose the new instruments and these subtests were separately timed. These are vocabulary (talasalitaan) composed of 30 items and has 6 minutes time allotment, analogy (ugnayan) composed of 30 items and also has 6 minutes time allotment, numerical ability (kakayahan sa bilang) composed of 25 items and has 20 minutes time allotment and non-verbal ability (isinalarawang problema) composed of 50 items and also has 20 minutes time allotment. PKP are designed for Filipino adults whose age range is 16 years old and above. PKP is an objective test since it is a multiple choice type of test. Items are based on the Filipino way of life and experiences. Intelligence tests are basically use to estimate the aptitude and potential of individuals in schools, business and industries, and in different other types of environment where one’s capability for doing a given task becomes an issue and needs assessment.

      In school, mental ability test serve as basis for screening, classifying and identifying needs that will enhance the learning process. In business and industry, they are utilized as predictors of occupational achievement. They serve as the gauge of an applicant’s ability and fitness for a particular job as well as for promotional purposes. Therapeutic agencies also make use of mental ability tests in order to undertake proper planning and implementation of treatment programs. For vocational rehabilitation and counseling purposes, mental ability tests are essential in determining one’s capacity to handle the challenges associated with certain degree programs. Achievement of both educational and vocational goals becomes realistic and possible with certain levels of intelligence.

      Specific instructions for administration and scoring of the test are given in the PKP manual. The test is easy to administer and score. Scoring of the test is simple because it is based on the correct responses made by the examinees. Some directions for administration are adequate lightning, proper ventilation, comfortable seating arrangement and freedom from any form of distractions. Examinees should be provided with test booklet, answer sheet, scratch paper and pencil/ball pen. Examiners should read all the boxed directions and timing should be indicated. They should be familiar with all directions before administering the test to anyone. They should also read verbatim, all boxed instructions and should strictly follow the timing for each of the 4 subtests.

      The norm group comprises of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Human Resource Management students from different year levels in De La Salle- College of Saint Benilde. These students are composed of boys and girls whose age ranges from 16-21 years old.

      Reliability of the test is the consistency of the results which an instrument yields and may be determined in several ways. There is no single consistency index that can satisfy all possible uses to which a given test may be put. Since they successfully measured what they really want to measure, we can say that it is indeed valid and reliable.

      The scoring can be found at page 29, 32, 33 and 36 of the PKP Manual and the Standard of Error in Measurement can be measured by:

      1.     I + II + III = CIS

      2.     CIS + IV= GIS

      *The raw scores have to be converted into percentage by using a Tscore (can be found at page 29 in the Manual). Since the scorers are undergraduates, they have to use UNDERGRAD (CU) as their basis. After that refer to an interpretation card to know your status (High average, Average, and so on…)

      The Panukat ng Katalinuhang Pilipino may be useful for educational, guidance, and counseling purposes. It can help identify areas of strengths and weaknesses which may be needed to facilitate the learning process. Business and industry may also find the instrument useful in assessing the ability and suitability of job applicants for particular types of work or occupation. However, some of the test items are hard to answer due to the Filipino’s modernity. They found it very “deep” and complicated because they are not used to it.  In general, this instrument or this PKP test may find usefulness and value in almost all Filipino settings which calls for ability assessment of an adult Filipino.
