      1) INDONESIAN TRANSITIONS AVAILABLE IN LEIDEN
Henk Schulte Nordholt (ed), 'Indonesian Transitions', issued by
Pustaka Pelajar (Yogyakarta 2006) is distributed outside Indonesia by
KITLV Press and available through the Leiden office for 15 euros:
      KitlvPress@...; Phone: (+)31-71-5272372.
This book is the fourth volume in a series of publications stemming
from the research project 'Indonesia in Transition', which was funded
by the KNAW/Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. Between 1996 and
2005 Indonesia underwent fundamental changes. This book concentrates
on the ways these changes were experienced within Indonesian society.
The essays in this book cover a wide variety of interrelated fields:
the experience of crisis, law and legal certainty, the history of
regionalism, communalism and deforestation, civil society and Islam,
the student movement, and recent developments in the media and
communication technology. The book offers a window through which we
can look at the way people in Indonesia have experienced a turbulent
decade of transitions and how they have tried to find answers and new
directions to give shape to their lives.

      2) BOOK LAUNCHES ON BALI
The launching of two books (co-)authored by Henk Schulte Nordholt has
drawn considerable attention in the local and national media. 'Seabad
puputan Badung: perspektif Belanda dan Bali' appeared on the occasion
of the puputan that took place exactly one century ago in Badung. The
other book is the Indonesian version of the author's PhD thesis,
published as 'The spell of power: sejarah politik Bali 1650-1940'.
The dailies Kompas, Bali Post and Denpos covered both events
extensively, and the weekly Tempo devoted a special section to the
puputan book and the events described in it. Both books are co-
publications of Pustaka Larasan and KITLV-Jakarta. The Indonesian
weekly Tempo had a special report on the puputan and the source book
in its issue of October 8.

      3) LECTURE AND PLAY ABOUT MOLUCCAN HISTORY
On 28 November KITLV will present a lecture and play on Moluccan
history in the LAK-theatre in Leiden. Fridus Steijlen, author of a
recently published book on Moluccan history in the Netherlands, will
present highlights of the integration process of the Moluccans,
alternated with readings from 'Vrouwen van Westkapelle' (Women from
Westkapelle) a theatre play about Moluccan history in the Netherlands
by actress Nel Lekatompessy. The free event will start at 15.00
hours. Sign up through email: kitlv@... or by telephone:

      6) COURSE ON INDONESIA POSTPONED
