      “One Year Later”

(Written in Honor of those who died and survived Hurricane Katrina)

      What happened in New Orleans?

      Was atrocious

      Another tactic implemented

      To keep Blacks

      Poverty stricken

      And exploit us

      Some speak of a conspiracy

      To covertly demolish them

      That’s ageless

      Countless stories

      Fill up pages

      Of mental memory books

      Some are pleasant

      Some are funny

      Some leave you shook

      Some make you mad

      Some solve mysteries

      All are important

      All are informative

      All are interesting

      All

      Are history

      And mostly all

      Were left…

      With nothing

      Not one single remnant

      Of a family heirloom

      Everything taken

      At the hand of

      Politic in politicians

      Disguised to blend in

      With Mother Nature

I immediately send up a prayer

      Portraying the human purveyor

      Of possibilities

      Praying that people are saved

Also that not many will endure

      A watery grave

      This tragedy

      Is traumatically

      Tragic

      A travesty

      A technicality

      Tediously overlooked

      A mission

      Totally off the books

Even though I didn't experience it

      First-handedly

      I instantly

      Became symptomatic

      And aggressively infected

      With pain

      I gained an immediate anger

      Against those

Who knew of this impeding danger

      Yet did nothing

      Well,

      Then again

      They eventually did

      But by then

      It was already

      Way to late

      One year later…

Listening to the radio one morning

A “people poll” question was placed

      Pondering on

      Last night’s premier

      Of a new

      “Spike Lee Joint”

      “When The Levees Broke”

      The discussion

      And comments

      Were no joke

      To witness footage taken but

      Never showed

      Of faces filled with fear

      Forsaken and forgotten

      Left to die

      Like the many, many bodies

      Afloat

      Destruction

      And

      Damage

      Demolishment

      And

      Death

      Every second of it

      Took my breath

      Slavery days

      Reincarnated

      Rein acted blatantly

      Visible by the

      Separation of families

      And families are still separated

      Displaced and disgraced

      Deceived to believe

That not only just their kin

      But help was also coming

      One year later

      Whole neighborhoods

      Are still untouched

      Unearthed and

      Never searched

      So-called “Rescue Worker’s”

      Too lazy

      To work

      Unwilling to lurk

      And discover

“They acted like we weren't American Citizens”

“Like we don't work and pay taxes”

“We were treated like those of a Third-world Country”

“This is the United States of America

      One year later

      Nothing has changed

      Most places state

      Has remained

      The same

      Who’s really to blame?

      Well that’s the $1,000.000 question….

      Isn't it?

      In honor

      Of those lost

      And those

      Who survived

      I decided to finally

      Write a poem

      Detailing my feelings

      And dealing with demons

      Destined to discourage

      But I delved deep

      Pulling my optimism higher

      I came to this conclusion…

      Someone once said,….

“Everything done in the dark will come to light”

      Remember that

      Soon enough

      God will decide when

      He’s ready

      To reveal the answer

      Mark my words…

      Just

      Be

      Patient
