On Thursday, May 12th, a festive encounter took place between an interfaith group from the University of Richmond Virginia and our interfaith group of Haifa University , which meets under the auspices of the Jewish-Arab Center in the university and the Interfaith Encounter Association. The encounter was the culmination of a full day that the American group dedicated, as guests of "Hillel", to visit the city. First the group met with Rabbi Dr. Golan Ben Horin, one of the founders of the Haifa Interfaith Forum in Beit Hagefen, for a talk about space and sacredness, then it held an art visit in the valley guided by Zehava Koronio, Chief Guide of Beit Hagefen. Later the group visited the Bahai Gardens and the Ahmedi community in Kababir, guided by Muad Ahmed Ouda, the General Secretary of the community.

The encounter with the Haifa U. Interfaith Encounter group included a lecture and conversation about the Christian community in Haifa and the various Christian communities in the land, guided by Rima Farah, who writes her theses on this theme in the Department of Middle East History. Later a conversation was held with Prof. Yitzchak  Weismann, Head of the Jewish-Arab Center , who reviewed the Center's activities and the emphasis that was put this year on the importance of the religious element also in the political discourse.

Then a short lesson in Talmud was led by Dr. Moshe Lavie, of the Department of Jewish History, which was based on analyzing Talmudic aspects in the work of the singer and music maker Ehud Banai. In the end of this fascinating day the group went up to the 30th floor, for a panoramic view of the city and the Carmel Mountain .

We are all hopeful that such visits will contribute to the coming together with better mutual understanding between all communities of Haifa , particularly in the University, and that meeting with parallel groups in different universities, in the country and abroad, will continue to flourish and nourish.

Reported: David Barak- Gorodezky, Coordinator of the group
