TOns of hard rock and heavy metal and punk rock news
- Ray Waddell of Billboard.com reports: Billboard will fete Ozzy Osbourne with the "Legend of Live" award at the 2009 Billboard Touring Awards, set for November 5 at New York's Roosevelt Hotel. The "Legend of Live" award recognizes an individual who has made significant and lasting contributions to live music and the touring business, and acknowledges the recipient's commitment to the art of performing live and reaching fans through the concert experience.
Ozzy recently moved his booking responsibilities to William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, where his responsible agent is contemporary music head Marc Geiger — one of the founders of Lollapalooza. "WME is thrilled that we get to work with Ozzy," says Geiger. "I don't even know what to say, as he has accomplished so much in so many areas, let alone his influence on thousands of rock musicians and fans. We are just lucky to be able to work with him…and by the way, the new record sounds incredible. Ozzy rules."
Ozzy would be the first to admit he's not perfect. And the road can become a grind these days. "I want to give the audience my heart and soul every night, but sometimes I pull it off and sometimes I don't," he says. "We're human. I don't use any tricks, I don't lip synch my voice, what you see is what you get. I've done my fair share of bad gigs, and I'm not embarrassed to say that."
DEF LEPPARD singer Joe Elliott supported the reunited MOTT THE HOOPLE on the final night of their run of shows on October 6 at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo in London, England. Elliott and his backing band — which consisted of members of THE QUIREBOYS — appeared under the DOWN 'N' OUTZ banner in what was described by the vocalist at the time as "a one-off performance, not the start of a new project."
The setlist, which comprised of songs the members of MOTT THE HOOPLE were involved with after they split in 1974, was as follows:
01. Golden Opportunities (Ian Hunter)
02. Overnight Angels (Ian Hunter)
03. One More Chance To Run (BRITISH LIONS)
04. Shouting & Pointing (MOTT)
05. Storm (MOTT)
06. Career (MOTT)
07. Who Do You Love (Ian Hunter)
08. By Tonight (Mott)
09. England Rocks (Ian Hunter)
10. Good Times (MOTT, originally recorded by THE EASYBEATS)
The band was:
* Joe Elliott: Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Piano
* Paul Guerin: Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals
* Guy Griffin: Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals
* Keith Wier: Keyboards, Backing Vocals
* Phil Martini: Drums, Backing Vocals
* Ronnie Garrity: Bass
Only Ronnie isn't a member of THE QUIREBOYS, although he regularly plays in a band with Cosmo, the original guitarist in the HEAVY METAL KIDS, one of Joe and DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen's favorite bands.
Joe also invited THE QUIREBOYS singer Spike up to sing "Career" while Joe swapped over to the piano!
When Classic Rock magazine spoke to guitarist Paul Guerin ahead of a December tour from THE QUIREBOYS, he revealed, "As we speak, we are recording studio versions of [the songs we performed at the concert]. The bass and drums for 10 tracks have already gone down. I start the guitars tomorrow; Griff's already doing his. Spike's also going to be involved [with the song he sang live, 'Career']. Basically, we are going to do all of the music and backing vocals before flying it across to Joe at his studio in Dublin. The plan is to release a studio album and DVD in one package. The studio album will also include tracks that we didn't have time to play during a 45-minute gig. Emails are currently flying back and forth about those extra songs."
Ozzy Osbourne (BLACK SABBATH), Ray Davies (THE KINKS) and Lou Reed joined METALLICA on stage earlier tonight (Friday, October 30) at Madison Square Garden in New York City for their performance at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concert.
METALLICA's setlist was as follows:
01. For Whom The Bell Tolls
03. Turn The Page
04. Sweet Jane (w/ Lou Reed )
05. White Light White Heat (w/ Lou Reed)
06. Iron Man (w/ Ozzy Osbourne)
07. Paranoid (w/ Ozzy Osbourne)
08. You Really Got Me (w/ Ray Davies)
09. All Day And All Of The Night (w/ Ray Davies)
10. Stone Cold Crazy
11. Enter Sandman
In his review of the concert, John Soeder of The Plain Dealer writes, "METALLICA was on hand to represent the harder side of rock. The headbanging portion of the evening commenced with 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'.
"In addition to a sampling of their own fist-pumping anthems, singer-guitarist James Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett, bassist Robert Trujillo and drummer Lars Ulrich took a stab at BOB SEGER's 'Turn the Page' before summoning an impressive supporting cast.
"'Go (expletive) crazy!' Ozzy Osbourne instructed as METALLICA accompanied him on 'Iron Man' and 'Paranoid'.
"The inspired pairings continued as METALLICA tore through 'Sweet Jane' with Lou Reed and 'You Really Got Me' with Ray Davies."
With Halloween here again (Saturday, October 31), The Pulse of Radio asked a few of its favorite rockers to share some of their thoughts on this mysterious and scary holiday. TOOL and PUSCIFER frontman Maynard James Keenan said that he enjoys Halloween because it's more than just costumes and trick or treating. "It's an interesting season to me, having done a little research on it," he said. "It's an interesting holiday. I recommend that people really kind of dive into some more of the origins of, you know, why the jack-o-lantern on the porch and why the trick or treat — why the door to door. What is that all about? It really is an interesting story."
METALLICA's James Hetfield shares an embarrassing childhood memory about a costume he once had to wear: "I wanted to be Batman, but my mom made me a suit. You know, she was good at sewing, and she made me this thing, and I was like a giant tiger with the ears and everything. (laughs) Oh my God! There's a picture of me at school in the, you know, the school picture, and I got this goofy outfit on with the little whiskers and everyone else is like cowboys and stuff, and I'm sittin' there in my tiger outfit, and I don't think it was what I wanted to be. But that's what happened. (laughs)"
Rob Zombie, of course, is an expert on all things Halloween — after all, he's even made two movies named after the holiday — but he also happens to know his Halloween candy as well. He revealed his favorite on a recent conference call with reporters. "Candy corn is my favorite and I usually get very excited when I see it on the shelves, which they usually start laying out the Halloween stuff first week of August," he said. "So pretty much by the second week of August, I never want to see candy corn again, so . . . usually by the time I buy it, I open the bag in the car in the parking lot, on the way home, and by the time I get home I'm disgusted with myself for eating it. The days of gorging on Halloween candy are long gone."
Former SKID ROW frontman Sebastian Bach has issued the following update:
"Well, what can I say. What a long, strange trip it's been.
"As I type this, I just cannot believe that I am announcing to all of you that yes, we will be going on the road with GUNS N' fucking ROSES in my hometown country of Canada in January and February of 2010!!!!
"Wow. It felt really, really good to type that sentence.
"It's time to sit back and realize, hey, we have been doing this a long time. From GUNS N' ROSES taking us on tour in North America and Europe in 1991, Australia and New Zealand in 1993, taking us out again in America, Europe, and Canada in 2006, Axl Rose and myself recording 'Sorry' for 'Chinese Democracy' and 'Back In The Saddle', '(Love Is) A Bitchslap' and 'Stuck Inside' for my album 'Angel Down', taking us out again in Australia and New Zealand in 2007....
"Are you noticing a theme here? Loyalty? Friendship? Commitment? Passion? For rock n' roll. For life. For fun. For you, the rock fans who make it all possible. For the love of music, having a good time, and kicking out the motherfucking jams.
"Of course, none of this would be possible without the vision and generosity of one single man: Mr. Axl Rose. A man I am so unbelievably proud, and fortunate, to call my friend. A man whose unwavering voice, lyrics, and vision have been the soundtrack to our lives for more than 20 years now.
"I cannot wait to stand at the side of the stage every night, waiting for my favorite song, 'Street Of Dreams', to come around in the set. I cannot wait for the camaraderie, fun, and sense of purpose the road brings. I cannot wait to scream my fucking guts out into a microphone in the biggest cities, on the biggest stages, that my hometown country has to offer. I can't wait to see all my friends and family at the shows in Canada.
"One thing's for sure: I don't have to wait long!!
"C'ya soon Canada!! It's time to rock again!! I love it."

Bach's current solo band includes guitarist Nick Sterling, drummer Bobby Jarzombek and bassist Rob DeLuca. Playing second guitar with the former SKID ROW frontman will be either Johnny Chromatic or Charlie Bellmore.
Sebastian recently collaborated with HATEBREED frontman Jamey Jasta on several tracks for Bach's new solo album, with Nick and Charlie Bellmore of the Connecticut band PHANTOMS assisting during the pre-production process. The singer has also written material with John 5 (ROB ZOMBIE, MARILYN MANSON).
Bach is best known for selling 20 million albums as the former lead singer of SKID ROW. He has gone on to star on Broadway and television, including five seasons on CW's "Gilmore Girls", as well as hit shows on VH1, MTV and CMT. Bach's most recent studio project was "Angel Down", his first solo album since 1999. The record features 14 songs with a guest appearance by GUNS N' ROSES front man Axl Rose on three cuts, including a blistering version of AEROSMITH's "Back In The Saddle".
ROB ZOMBIE has launched his new, official website. Check it out at this location.
Rob Zombie recently issued the following message to fans:
"It all begins in Phoenix tonight! And tonight I am starting a new feature called Zombies Across America.
If you are going to the show then take some pics of you and your friends partying at the show or on the way to the show and send them to us. We will keep a running blog of every city and all the Zombie Heads across the country!"
As previously reported, in a sudden and unexpected move, Rob Zombie has inked a new worldwide deal with leading rock label Roadrunner Records through its Loud & Proud imprint.
This shocking announcement comes as Zombie exits his former label of eighteen years, where he sold fifteen million records as a solo artist and with his former band White Zombie. Zombie’s new album, Hellbilly Deluxe 2, previously set for release on November 17 will now be released by Roadrunner/Loud & Proud Records in early 2010.
“It certainly wasn’t an easy decision to make after all this time, but it had to be done,” states Zombie. “I love this new record and wanted to surround myself with an excited new group of people who can reignite my enthusiasm for working within a hard rock record label. Roadrunner seems to be the perfect place.”
“Roadrunner is thrilled to be involved with Rob Zombie on a worldwide basis as he is a multiple-threat artist whom we’ve admired for many years,” said Roadrunner president Jonas Nachsin.
Tom Lipsky, founder and president of Loud & Proud echoed Nachsin’s sentiment, “Rob Zombie hits hard on Hellbilly Deluxe 2 and the fans expect nothing less. We are excited about the monster mayhem that he is certain to create!”
The first single from the new album, “What?” recently launched at all rock radio formats and is quickly climbing the charts. This latest album marks the follow-up to 1998’s triple platinum Hellbilly Deluxe.
The track listing is as follows:
'Mars Needs Women'
'Death And Destiny Inside The Dream Factory'
'Cease To Exist'
'Werewolf Women Of The SS'
'The Man Who Laughs'
In support of this release Zombie, will kick off his first headline tour since 2007 in Phoenix, AZ on October 29th. Shows in Las Vegas, NV on the 30th, and a very special Halloween event on October 31st in Hollywood , CA are set to follow. Zombie will be accompanied by his longtime band mates - guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D and drummer Tommy Clufetos.

MÖTLEY CRÜE frontman Vince Neil has scheduled the following solo tour dates:
Nov. 14 - Northern Lights Casino - Walker, MN
Nov. 19 - Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe, PA
Nov. 20 - Northern Lights - Clifton Park, NY
Nov. 25 - Capital One Bank Theatre at Westbury - Westbury, NY
Nov. 27 - Wellmont Theatre - Montclair, NJ
Nov. 28 - Harro East Ballroom - Rochester, NY
Dec. 04 - Snoqualmie Casino-Ballroom - Snoqualmie, WA
In a recent interviewe with Jason Le Miere of RevolverMag.com, Neil stated about the progress of the songwriting sessions for his upcoming solo album, "Just working on the music right now. Haven't gotten in the studio yet, just working on songs. We'll probably get the music done next month. I'll get into vocals in December, should have it finished up by January."
When asked how it is different for him playing with his solo band as opposed to with MÖTLEY CRÜE, Neil sai, "Well, MÖTLEY CRÜE is, you know, MÖTLEY CRÜE, a big production and everything. My thing is basically going out with my fiends and just having a good time and just playing straight-ahead rock 'n' roll . Right now it's just one-offs, so it's I'm home, then we got to fly to the gig, do the gig, then fly back home, where obviously with MÖTLEY we don't do that. Like I said, in 2010, after the record comes out, we'll go out and do a proper tour and get back on the bus."
New Jersey thrash metal veterans OVERKILL have inked a multi-album deal with Nuclear Blast Records. The band's new CD, "Ironbound" — which is described as a true "thrasher-piece" — is scheduled for release on January 29, 2010.

Added Nuclear Blast A&R representative Jaap Wagemaker: "Growing up with classics such as 'Feel The Fire', 'Taking Over' and 'The Years Of Decay' and seeing the band countless times playing live, it is sure to say that one of our favorite bands of all time has finally found their home at the powerhouse that Nuclear Blast is today! We are very much looking forward to start working with OVERKILL and are eager to release their new album, 'Ironbound', to the masses! Amy Kelly of Ultimate-Guitar.com recently conducted an interview with DOWN guitarist Pepper Keenan. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: After so many years in the business, I'm sure you've experienced every type of festival or tour. What was your impression of the latest tour?
Pepper: Right now, it's probably my favorite tour that I've ever done or that we've ever headlined for. We've pretty much always played by ourselves, so we've played two-and-a-hours straight. We're bringing bands with us. There are two other bands that we love, and it's just a great package together. It's the most fun on the road that I've had.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: The members of DOWN could easily be considered veteran players with the collective number of years in the business. Do you see yourself slowing down at all in the next five or ten years?
Pepper: I enjoy touring. You get spoiled sometimes. We've been doing it so long, and we kind of do it at a comfortable pace now. In the beginning we were all maniacs. Now we have two buses and we have room so that we don't kill each other. We figure out how to make it work.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: There has been some information floating around about the next album, which isn't slated for release until 2010. Are you basically in the earliest stages of pre-production?
Pepper: Yeah. I think we're planning at earliest the summer of 2010. I think we start recording in January, so we'll be doing that.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: The time period between DOWN releases can go from anywhere to five to seven years, obviously because you have your other bands. With that amount of time, do you gather quite an arsenal of material by the time you go into the studio?
Pepper: Sometimes, yes. When you're touring as much as we have like this, it's really showing which songs work in a live setting. I think we feed on a lot of that energy to see which songs are good and bad. There are certain songs that work like gangbusters. You use that mentality and that attitude, and you focus that on writing new songs in the vein of that kind of stuff.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: So with that mentality in mind, at this point do you have quite a few ideas ready to be recorded?
Pepper: Yeah, definitely. We have some. We actually have one microphone, one vocal track, stripping it back kind of like the first record – but even better.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: Do you have anyone in mind to produce it?
Pepper: I think I'm going to work with an old friend of mine who I grew up with in New Orleans. He used to produce all kinds of bands, and now he's back in it. I think we're going to work with him.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: In terms of working with Kirk (Windstein, guitarist), is it usually a tradeoff with who comes up with the guitar parts?
Pepper: I come up with a lot of the main riffs, and Kirk pretty much does the same. A lot of times if I come with something, Kirk will do something to balance it out that I couldn't play in a million years.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: How would you describe your distinct styles and approaches to the guitar?
Pepper: I would say my style is more hammer-fisted. I use thick strings and downpick everything. Kirk is a little bit more precision-oriented, I guess. Kirk can play all the fast solos and I'll do all the David Gilmour shit! So that's a pretty good separation. It's a good balance.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: On DOWN's fan forums, there have been discussions about the possibility of acoustic tracks on the new record. Can we expect heavy use of the acoustic?
Pepper: We have a bunch of parts that we're hanging on to, but we figure on the last two records that we had a pretty good mix. Now we want to go straight for playing a heavy-hitter song. So that's the plan. Whether that happens, I don't know. That's the master plan, but it could change all tomorrow.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: There was a message from Rex (Brown, bass) on the band's MySpace page regarding his not being able to play on the latest tour.
Pepper: He needed to see his family and get things together. So we thought it would be better if he could get all that straightened out. We've been on the road three years. I can't believe that someone else hasn't tagged out. That's a long time to be away from your family.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: Can we expect any future releases that might hit the shelves before the 2010 album?
Pepper: We have a huge live DVD. What it is, it's the first time we got back together after Hurricane Katrina. We decided to go to Europe. New Orleans was all screwed up and we were all screwed up mentally. We decided to just go to Europe and play some shows. We hadn't played there for four or five years. I made some fliers online to get people to come out and put them up themselves. When we got to Europe, every show was sold out. So we started it in Phil's barn during rehearsals and we ended up having over 50,000 people coming. That's when we decided to do a third record.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: How many hours of footage did you get?
Pepper: I think we have 80 hours of footage or something.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: Will you be touring up until the end of the year?
Pepper: We tour until the end of September, I think. Then we're done because I'm getting ready to have a baby. I've got to get my ass on home.
Vocalist Russell Allen U.S. progressive metallers SYMPHONY X has joined the list of guest musicians who will appear on the forthcoming release from EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet's AVANTASIA project.
So far Tobias has confirmed the following musicians to be part of the forthcoming AVANTASIA opus:
* Klaus Meine (SCORPIONS)
* Tim "Ripper" Owens (JUDAS PRIEST , YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, ICED EARTH)
* Eric Singer (KISS, ALICE COOPER)
* Michael Kiske (HELLOWEEN)
* Jorn Lande (MASTERPLAN, ARK, MILLENIUM)
* Bob Catley (MAGNUM)
* Sascha Paeth
* Felix Bohnke (EDGUY)
* Alex Holzwarth (RHAPSODY, SIEGES EVEN)
* Russell Allen (SYMPHONY X)
More guests will be confirmed soon.
Sammet has decided that the forthcoming chapter from AVANTASIA will be spread over two albums. He explained: "I have always given my very best, but this new chapter in AVANTASIA's history is too much and too ambitious to be just a regular album. I have worked on it for years now, and it has become even more than two albums!
"I knew that story would be spread out over two albums back then when we started working on it in 2006, 'cause we had written a real rock opera of over 20 songs even back then. But since then, we kept composing, and out came even bigger and better material.
"Looking at the music industry today with all the CD burning and downloading, I guess in the near future many of us traditional rock and metal bands won't be able to spend such a production budget. I am afraid I won't be able to afford so many guests and such a big production with orchestration and a choir and all that. That's why this production takes so much time; it may be the last big epic I will be able to afford, and I want it to be the biggest piece I have worked on so far."
Kiske has appeared on every AVANTASIA album so far, including the first two full-length releases, "The Metal Opera" (2001) and "The Metal Opera Pt. II" (2002).
Regarding the new AVANTASIA album's musical direction, Sammet recently stated, "We've got quite many songs, and it ranges from epic ballads to metal opera. From pop to hard rock to folk to speed metal. My best friend, who co-wrote the story of 'The Metal Opera' back then, just listened to some of the tracks and he said that it will blow people away and enchant AVANTASIA fans and it will surely piss people off . . . It's just enchanting music. And these days honest and good music is kind of offending to some, that's pretty sick, isn't it? But as long as I get goose bumps hearing majestic music, I do not really care if I am fashionable or not."
The most recent album from AVANTASIA, "The Scarecrow", was one of the 20 best-selling albums in whole Europe during the fourth week of January 2008, according to a press release.
"The Scarecrow" was released on January 25, 2008 as a standard CD as well as rare picture (double) vinyl. It features a long list of guest musicians, including Bob Catley, ex-MASTERPLAN frontman Jorn Lande, ex-HELLOWEEN singer Michael Kiske, Alice Cooper , KISS drummer Eric Singer, SCORPIONS guitarist Rudolf Schenker and GAMMA RAY's Kai Hansen. The album produced a Top 10 German hit single, "Lost In Space", and entered the national charts in 15 countries, with the CD landing in the Top 10 in four countries.
(Story last updated on October 30 at 4:35 a.m. EST) Legendary hard rock drummer Chuck Biscuits (born Charles Montgomery), whose lengthy résumé includes stints in such flagship underground acts as BLACK FLAG and SOCIAL DISTORTION, appears to have been the victim of a death hoax involving a Facebook page and several months' worth of correspondence from someone claiming to be Chuck. (More information can be found on the blog of James Greene, Jr., a freelance music writer from Brooklyn, New York.)
***UPDATE***: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada's The Straight contacted Biscuits' former bandmate Joey Keithley, singer-guitarist of D.O.A. He confirmed that Biscuits is very much alive. BrooklynVegan also received word that Keith Morris of the CIRCLE JERKS has refuted reports of Chuck's passing.
A person using the e-mail address that was previously believed to have been utilized by Biscuits sent out an e-mail Tuesday morning (October 27) claiming that Chuck, who is 44 years old, died on October 24 after a prolonged battle with throat cancer.
"In response to the inquires, thank you for all the support," the e-mail stated. "Chuck did not survive his battle with throat cancer. He passed surrounded by his family on 10/24/09."
Since the original death story went viral, several people (including former DANZIG bassist Eerie Von and Chuck's brother Bob Montgomery, who was apparently "somewhat estranged" from Biscuits for a time) have openly questioned the reports of Chuck's passing. It is also being claimed that Biscuits was seen at work earlier today and that he is "pissed off" about the rumors of his demise. As of this writing, however, he has yet to come forward and pubicly confirm that he is alive and well.
Chuck Biscuits is probably best known for his work with DANZIG. Beginning in 1988, Chuck played on that group's first four albums, which are often hailed as DANZIG's best (thanks in no small part to Chuck's powerful drumming style ). The percussionist also appeared on 1993's "Thrall: Demonsweatlive" EP; that release yielded an unexpected chart-burning hit for DANZIG in "Mother" a song the band originally included on their self-titled debut.
TORONTO — The founder of Vancouver punk group D.O.A. says that his former drummer, Chuck Biscuits, is alive and well and Internet reports of his death are part of a "cruel hoax."
Joe Keithley told The Canadian Press on Friday that the drummer's brother contacted him and confirmed that Biscuits is indeed alive.
"He's well and alive, so that's good news," Keithley said on the line from his Vancouver office.
Several major news outlets in Canada, the United States and Britain reported Thursday that Biscuits had died of throat cancer.
The reports seem to have originated from a single blog post written by New York freelance writer James Greene Jr., who has since claimed that he was duped by an anonymous emailer.
"I'm sorry I unknowingly spread this horrible lie," Greene blogged Friday. "I apologize to the world, Chuck's family, Chuck's friends, and especially Chuck."
Biscuits was the original drummer for metal band Danzig, and also performed with L.A. hardcore innovators Black Flag and Social Distortion.
"(The) guy was an incredible talent, probably the best punk-rock drummer of all time," Keithley said.
Keithley heard the news of Biscuits' death on Thursday after getting some "weird emails." He took to Wikipedia and found that Biscuits was listed as having succumbed to throat cancer on Oct. 24.
There were memorial pages on Facebook and reports of Biscuits' death had spread instantaneously via Twitter and through blogs and some mainstream media outlets, all of which attributed the news to the original blog post.
Keithley thought it was weird no one had told him, so he phoned Biscuits' brother, Bob ("he got freaked out ... he was driving a bus, so I figured he might drive the bus off the road, because he's getting the news from me," Keithley said).
Biscuits' brother calmed down, called the drummer and drove to see him, said Keithley.
"You go on a rollercoaster of emotions," Keithley said. "Chuck and I aren't that close anymore, right, but we sure played some great music together."
In fact, Biscuits is only the latest in a wave of celebrities who have had to announce lately that they are still alive.
Twitter was abuzz a few weeks ago with rumours that Kanye West had died in a car crash ("R.I.P. Kanye West" remained a top trending topic for days). The report emanated from a fake Fox News mainpage design, generated by Internet pranksters.
The story was snapped up widely by blogs who did report that it was only a rumour, but furthered the speculation anyway.
And in June, Jeff Goldblum's personal publicist was forced to publicly dismiss Internet rumours that the 57-year-old actor plunged to his death on a movie shoot in New Zealand.
That story, too, circulated in blogs before being spread at supersonic speed via Twitter, which has become something of a misinformation superhighway.
Paul Knox, chair of the School of Journalism at Toronto's Ryerson University, points out that hoaxes have been around as long as journalism.
But Biscuits' story spread from blogs to major media outlets, which Knox says must do better.
"I think the lesson for serious news organizations here is: don't repost or republish unless you have verified and if you feel you have to do so because of competitive pressure, make sure you have some way of flagging the post or the information as unverified," he said in a telephone interview.
"Make sure that you distinguish and your hopefully trustworthy staff have been able to check it out, and that you're passing this on because you feel that its mere existence is newsworthy, but it's unverified."
Toronto rocker Kim Mitchell, meanwhile, experienced a situation similar to the Biscuits death hoax several years ago, when reports circulated in the blogosphere and on Facebook and MySpace that Pye Dubois, his longtime collaborator, had died.
At the time, Dubois and Mitchell weren't speaking to one another after having a falling out. Dubois had become reclusive, Mitchell said, and when friends couldn't reach him for days at a time, rumours began to spread that he had died.
When Mitchell heard the news, he was understandably upset.
"I felt horrible," Mitchell recalled in a telephone interview from Edmonton. "I panicked a bit. ... Because I thought: 'Holy crap, I wrote a ton of music with this guy, and he's holding a grudge against me to the point where (he won't) notify me that he's really ill."'
Fortunately, Mitchell still had channels of reaching Dubois and verified that he was OK.
"Funny how before something's checked it can explode into nonsense," he said. "In seconds, it's all over the planet."
"It just shows you the power of the Internet," he said.
"You can say something that's completely untrue, and I mean, I was bombarded with emails and phone calls within about an hour. It was a real drag."
Former VOIVOD bassist/vocalist Eric Forrest's France-based E-FORCE band has secured the direct support slot to SACRIFICE for their November 21 performance at the Opera House in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Also appearing on the bill are MAXIMUM RNR (featuring former DAYGLO ABORTIONS frontman Gymbo) and SPEWGORE.
E-FORCE released its sophomore album, "Modified Poison", in February 2008 via France's Thundering Records. The CD, which was recorded at a studio in Toulouse, France with producer Patrick Freidrich, includes collaborations with Colin-Tocquaine as well as Tim and Kevin Guttierez of PROJECT: FAILING FLESH. Moreover, Eric decided to re-record/cover a song from the unreleased VOIVOD 2001 demo as a tribute to late VOIVOD guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour.
E-FORCE's debut album, "Evil Forces", came out in October 2003 via Season Of Mist Records.
E-FORCE's current lineup is as follows:
Eric Forrest (VOIVOD) - Bass, Vocals
Vincent Agar - Lead Guitar
Julian (DWAIL) - Rhythm Guitar
Alsvid (SETH, ENTHRONED) – Drums
WORLD COLLISION, the new Sarasota, Florida-based band featuring NEUROTICA guitarist Shawn Bowen, has just released a new CD entitled "Trancention".
Regarding the band's musical direction, Bowen stated: "WORLD COLLISION certainly has its roots in rock and metal music, but in this band I play an eclectic mix of different instruments from all over the planet. I play sitar, hammered dulcimer (sometimes through a cry-baby pedal), harmonium, a new instrument from India called a 'Shahi Baaja' that has 15 strings, and on one song I play propane tanks that have 'tongues' that are tuned to sound somewhat like an eerie, dissonant xylephone. Our drummer actually carved his own drum kit with a chainsaw and uses goatskins on them rather than plastic drumheads, and tunes them with ropes in the African tradition. He even carved the guitar I play with his chainsaw. Instead of bass guitar, we have a didgeridoo player for low end, he makes his own didges and has one or more in every key possible. And we have an amazing female vocalist, so this band really has a new, and fresh sound that I've never heard before and
simply can not be replicated by any other group of people."

Orange County, California's hardcore/metal act THROWDOWN will release its new album, "Deathless", in Europe on January 22, 2010 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD, which will be made available in the U.S. on November 10 through E1 Music (formerly KOCH Records), was produced by Mudrock (AVENGED SEVENFOLD, GODSMACK, POWERMAN 5000) and was mixed by Chris "Zeuss" Harris, who has previously worked with HATEBREED, THE RED CHORD and SHADOWS FALL, among others. The artwork was created by Ryan Clark of Invisible Creature and DEMON HUNTER and can be viewed below.
THROWDOWN will embark on "The Deathless Tour I" in November/December. Support on the trek will come from BURY YOUR DEAD, FOR TODAY, ABACABB and THE WORLD WE KNEW.
"Deathless" will be the band's fourth album with Dave Peters as frontman and primary songwriter, its second with guitarist Mark Choiniere (who joined the band in 2005) and first with bassist Mark Mitchell. Drummer Jarrod Alexander (ex-DEATH BY STEREO), who performed on the band's breakthrough "Haymaker" album in 2003, returned to work on "Deathless".
THROWDOWN last year completed touring behind the band's last album, "Venom & Tears", which was produced by the group with Mudrock. The past two years saw them on the road with KORN (Australia), KILLSWITCH ENGAGE (Canada), CAVALERA CONSPIRACY (U.S.), MACHINE HEAD / ARCH ENEMY (U.S.), headlining the Ernie Ball stage on the Vans Warped Tour, hitting major European festivals like Download, and headlining a U.S. tour of their own.
Frontiers Records has announced the signing of Sweden's THE MURDER OF MY SWEET.
The band was formed by drummer, songwriter and producer Daniel Flores, who — after a few false starts of what was to become THE MURDER OF MY SWEET — just by coincidence came across the magnificent singer Angelica Rylin, well endowed with the right look, voice and talents, being exactly what Daniel was searching for. The rest of THE MURDER OF MY SWEET's lineup followed — guitarist Daniel Palmqvist, bass player Johan Niemann and keyboardist Andreas Lindahl all being mentally, creatively and spiritually the right combination to complete the perfect match.
THE MURDER OF MY SWEET's sound is rich in influence and yet distinctly unique. The lush melodic cinematic landscapes reflect the diversity of the five members own musical experiences. From Angelica's soaring vocal melodies and sweeping choruses to the explosive layers of guitars from Palmqvist and the thrilling orchestratic keyboard arrangements painted by Andreas Lindahl backed by the bombastic and dynamic rhythms of Niemann and Flores. The resulting collaborations are a work both haunting and uplifting — fuelled by the curiosity of seeing where their burning ambitions will take them.
"All of us in THE MURDER OF MY SWEET are highly excited to be collaborating and releasing our debut album with such an experienced and talented label as Frontiers," says Daniel Flores.
"We feel extremely privileged to be band mates with such great bands as JOURNEY, TOTO and SURVIVOR, to mention just a few," adds Angelica. "We are looking forward to launch and to get our music heard world wide. A special thank you goes out to all our fans on MySpace who have been so dedicated and devoted since the start in 2007."
THE MURDER OF MY SWEET's single for the track "Bleed Me Dry" will be released exclusively in the band's home country on November 13. The band will also present the release with a launch gig in their hometown on the same day at the Roq Club.
The CD single track listing:
01. Bleed Me Dry
02. Bleed Me Dry (instrumental version)
03. Sands Of Time (non-album track)

THE MURDER OF MY SWEET's debut album, entitled "Divanity", will be released worldwide on Frontiers Records in January 2010.
Painkiller Records has announced the signing of Holland's CEREMONY OF OPPOSITES for the release of the band's second full-length album, "Seeds of Resurrection", which is scheduled to hit the streets in late 2009/early 2010.
Playing death metal with shades of thrash, viking and black metal running through it, CEREMONY OF OPPOSITES is one of the few metal bands to include a female amongst its ranks in the shape of Asje Van Loon (bass, backing vocals), who, along with Pascal (guitar, backing vocals) and Marcel Oerlemans (lead guitars, lead vocals), was one of the original founder members in 2005. Drummer Tim Verheijden (THE MORGAN AFFAIR, SURMOUNT, ex-NIHILISTIC, ex-FACIAL HUMILIATION), with his boundless energy, is a recent recruit to the band.
Regarding the decision to sign with Painkiller Records, Pascal commented, "We had discussions with different labels that wanted to release 'Seeds of Resurrection', but after speaking with Painkiller Records we had a good feeling about it. We play this music because it's the music we love and we put our hearts and souls into this album. It's like our baby and you definitely don't want to give your baby to somebody who doesn't care. Painkiller Records believes in us, and we are on the same page. We are given complete creative freedom, combined with worldwide distribution and promotion. We are very much looking forward to going on the road with our new drummer Tim to support the album and we are starting off in style with champagne at the Halloween Metal Meeting in Belgium to celebrate."
German viking metallers VARG have inked a deal with Nuclear Blast Records. The band's sophomore album, "Blutaar", is scheduled for release on January 22, 2010.
"We're proud to be part of the family without having to hide the wolf in sheep's clothes," the group says in a statement. "Nuclear Blast approached us honestly and have the balls to kick ass together with us. This powerful alliance makes us happy! Let's fight against nazis and the haters who wanted to see us in the rightwing corner — the wolves are hunting again!"

NEGURA BUNGET — the Romanian band that incorporates elements of black metal, progressive metal, folk metal and dark ambient — has issued the following update:
"We regret to announce that NEGURA BUNGET is forced to cancel its participation on the SATYRICON tour from December.
"The whole tour plans are poorly fixed for the moment, and the organizer has been doing some strange arrangements concerning NEGURA BUNGET, announcing us then canceling us from gigs without being informed, so we are now forced to cancel our participation.
"We made a lot of sacrifices to make this tour happen for us, so we regret doing this, but at the same time the way things are happening, it would just be a waste of energy for something that doesn't look to happen in good conditions.
"For all the people who wanted to see us, we announce now officially that we will be doing a full European tour in spring next year, promoting our new album, 'Vîrstele Pamîntului', as well as the soon-to-be-released live DVD, 'Focul Viu', and 'Maiestrit' — our 'Maiastru Sfetnic' album re-recording.
"We hope to see you all there under better circumstances."
NEGURA BUNGET's new album, "Vîrstele Pamîntului" (English translation: The Ages of the Land/Earth), is tentatively due in early 2010. The group states in a press release, "'Vîrstele Pamîntului' is an album about embracing your destiny, about choosing and consciously assuming a way of life. The earth is where we came from and where go back into, the one from above and beyond us. Understanding and respecting it is understanding yourself, your purpose and destiny.
"'Vîrstele Pamîntului' is an album about places of the earth and places of the spirit, about bounds transcending worlds.
"The work on the album is scheduled to be completed on a seclusion NEGURA BUNGET will take into the wilderness of the mountains in the following weeks, to concentrate solely on the work for this album, which will be a landmark for its future evolution. There is also a very special packaging for the album in work. More details about this will be revealed soon. You can expect another handmade, natural and organic concept extending from the music through visuals and packaging."
NEGURA BUNGET recently recorded a new song for inclusion on Code666 Records' compilation "Better Undead Than Alive II". Entitled "Cumpana (Balance/Ordeal)", the track was laid down at Negura MUSIC studio and is the first composition to be written by the band's new lineup:
Corb - Guitars/Vocals
Spin - Guitars
Gadinet - Bass
Inia Dinia - Keyboards
Ageru Pamanatului - Vocals/Pipes/Percussions/Xylophone
Negru - Drums/Percussions

Grindcore supergroup LOCK UP headlined the Terrorizer Stage at the U.K.'s Damnation Festival on Saturday, October 24 at Leeds University Union.
The almost mythical extreme metal behemoth — AT THE GATES frontman Tomas Lindberg, Anton Reisenegger of PENTAGRAM and CRIMINAL on guitar, NAPALM DEATH bassist Shane Embury and ex-DIMMU BORGIR and TESTAMENT drummer Nick Barker — played in the U.K. for the first time in almost ten years.
Norwegian black metal act THRONE OF KATARSIS (Candlelight Records) has recently expanded its lineup after seven unholy years being a duo. Founding members Infamroth (guitar , vocals) and Vardalv (drums) have recruited Sanrabb (GEHENNA) to take care of the bass duties. The group states, "Having been in the black metal scene since the early '90s, Sanrabb sure is a solid choice of bandmember."
Infamroth, Vardalv and Sanrabb are said to be "deeply involved" in the creative process for the band's next studio album, which is tentatively due next year.
Commented the band: "Sanrabb was supposed to become our second session bass-player, but after rehearsal we understood right away that we needed this person in the band. The extreme negative energy he managed to fill the whole room with fitted us perfectly. We managed to use this to create a darker feel to the music and I think you could say we drag each other down, mentally.
"We have already started creating new tracks for our next album, and so far these seems more progressive than before and far more depressing. Truly more intense and harder-hitting than before!"
With regards to the departure of THRONE OF KATARSIS' former session bass player Lord Imalas, the band said, "This was a natural development for the band, and no personal issues were ever involved. Lord Imalas has been a reliable and very talented bass player as well as a great person to deal with on tours. Respect to this man for sticking with us all these years!"
THRONE OF KATARSIS is currently looking for a new management for tours and festivals to promote its latest album, "Helvete - Det Iskalde Mørket" (2009).

Swedish metallers REVENGIA have issued the following update:
"REVENGIA is in writing mode for the third, yet unnamed, record. So far 11 songs are written and one more is on it's way. The songs are heavy, fast, doomy and melodic, just as usual in REVENGIA-land! Tobbe [Gustafsson] is doing a hell of a job on the vocals, as well on the lyrics. Conny [Pettersson] is adding some over the top drumming to the sound. So it will sound a little bit different, in a good way, but you will for sure recognize the sound.
"This time around we will put some extra time in arranging the songs before the start of recording."
REVENGIA last year parted ways with vocalist Andreas Tomasson and replaced him with Tobias Gustafsson (EUCHARIST, THE END, ARMAGEDDON , ETERNAL LIES).
The band's latest album, "Eraser", was released in Japan on November 21, 2007 via Soundholic Records.
REVENGIA in 2007 split with ARCH ENEMY drummer Daniel Erlandsson due to scheduling conflicts. He has since been replaced by Conny Pettersson (ANATA, TRENDKILL, ETERNAL LIES).
