Speaking to Rock Radio DJ Tom Russell, Ward revealed why he left HEAVEN & HELL before the band recorded the three new tracks for BLACK SABBATH s The Dio
    Message 1 of 1 , Apr 25, 2009
Speaking to Rock Radio DJ Tom Russell, Ward revealed why he left HEAVEN & HELL before the band recorded the three new tracks for BLACK SABBATH's "The Dio Years" compilation.

Ward said: "There was a track I was uncomfortable with. I was trying to accommodate the wishes of a couple of the band members, and I'm not good at that — I'm not that kind of a drummer. The way the guys wanted the drumming to be, I was unable to see it that way.

"All the way through that project everyone had an open mind — we didn't know if it was going to work. I went in to lay the best track I could, but it was just one of those musical things that didn't work out.

"I've never spoken publicly about this — at the time some things were said about me having other schedules to meet. That wasn't the case at all. There was a misunderstanding with the music, I was uncomfortable with some of the things surrounding the project, and that was it. I moved out.

"I thought Vinny Appice would be a much better choice — he's able to accommodate the kind of things that were being asked, and I'm not. I react. Vinny plays drums. There's a big difference."

Iommi broadly agreed with Ward's sentiments, albeit from a different angle. In an interview with Rock Radio, he explained, "The record company were asking for the songs fairly quickly, and Bill wanted to take more time over doing them. We thought, it's probably best we don't do them with Bill — he was feeling uncomfortable.

"He felt even more uncomfortable when we told him about touring for a year — he nearly had a fit! He hasn't done that for a long time. So he said, 'I don't think I'll be up for touring to that extent.'"

Speaking about the return of Appice, Iommi said: "Vinny's played more albums with Ronnie than Bill has. Bill only did 'Heaven and Hell'. And Vinny's done all the live stuff."

The video for "Bible Black", the first single from HEAVEN & HELL's highly anticipated new album, "The Devil You Know", will make its worldwide premiere this Saturday night, April 25, at 11:30 p.m. ET on VH1 Classic. The animated clip, produced by 23d Films, will air following the premiere of the newest episode of "That Metal Show", which features HEAVEN & HELL's Ronnie James Dio and Geezer Butler. Yahoo! Music will have the exclusive online premiere of the video starting Monday, April 27.

The "Bible Black" video was produced by Joseph A. Russo II and James A. Fino from 23d Films, Inc. and was directed byBen Ceccarelli. The epic song was one of the first songs written for the new album and finds the quartet of Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice in top form. "When you start off with a blockbuster like that, it makes the rest of the album so much easier because it gives you a benchmark to measure the other songs against," says Dio.

HEAVEN & HELL will make a rare in-store appearance at Best Buy in San Bernadino, California on Saturday, May 2. All four members of the group will be on hand to celebrate the release of "The Devil You Know". Best Buy stores will offer an exclusive version of the album featuring a bonus DVD with unreleased video of the band recording the album including studio performances, interviews, and other behind-the-scenes content. Fans who buy "The Devil You Know" at the San Bernadino Best Buy beginning on April 28 will get a wristband which will grant them access to get their copy signed by the band. Fans can also get wristbands for the event by purchasing the album at Best Buy stores in Burbank, Rancho Cucamonga and Riverside.

British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their classic album "British Steel" this summer (it was originally issued in April 1980) by performing the LP in its entirety for the very first time ever live on stage! In addition they will be playing some old favorites. Vocalist Rob Halford told Noisecreep, "It's like suddenly, thirty years have come upon us and we're about to celebrate. The album's technical anniversary is April of next year, but want to start the party early."

Halford added, "In today's economy, all artists have to think of something to do differently. We decided that this would be a great opportunity to do something that PRIEST has never done before, which is to play an album in its entirety. The band and the name 'JUDAS PRIEST' have both been around since 1969, so it is our fortieth anniversary, too. We seem to be in a constant celebration mode!"

According to Halford, PRIEST will make the tour a full sensory experience by recreating the "look" from the era during which they recorded the album. "We're going retro with the look of the band," Halford told Noisecreep. "In the tradition of PRIEST, we were often credited with kicking off the denim, leather, studs, whips and chains look, and there is a rich heritage with that. We want to bring that back with the stage set and other surprises."

Along with 1982's "Screaming for Vengeance" and 1990's "Painkiller", "British Steel" has long been considered one of metal's all-time classics. It was with this release that PRIEST truly broke through to the masses, with a pair of tracks that have become fixtures on rock radio — the enduring anthems "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight". But like all classic albums, there is not a single weak track detected on "British Steel", as evidenced by such standouts as the perennial concert highlight, "Metal Gods", as well as "Rapid Fire", "Grinder", "United" and "The Rage", among others.

Produced by Tom Allom, "British Steel" was recorded at the Tittenhurst Park in England — which is a mansion owned at the time by former THE BEATLES member Ringo Starr, and previously owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. In 2001, the album was remastered and reissued with extra bonus tracks, and also was the subject of an in-depth study as part of the popular "Classic Albums" DVD series.

      "British Steel" original track listing:

      01. Rapid Fire
      02. Metal Gods
      03. Breaking the Law
      04. Grinder
      05. United
      06. You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise
      07. Living After Midnight
      08. The Rage
      09. Steeler

JUDAS PRIEST — singer Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing, bassist Ian Hill, and drummer Scott Travis — remain as popular as ever to this day, confirmed once and for all upon the release of 2008's "Nostradamus", which became their highest-ever charting album in the U.S. Two years earlier, the group was the inaugural inductees into the "VH1 Rock Honors". The forthcoming summer dates with WHITESNAKE are surely not to be missed by metalheads from coast to coast, especially now that fans will be reintroduced up close and personal to the mighty "British Steel".

Libby Molyneaux of LA Weekly recently conducted an interview with MOTÖRHEAD's Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister. An excerpt from the article follows below.

Lemmy has stuck to his calling of inflicting musical and other mayhem since he discovered rock & roll as a lad in North Wales. At age 9, Ian Fraser Kilmister and a fellow hell-raiser were caught trying to derail a train. He was every mother's nightmare.

"I was the kid a lot of other mothers wouldn't let you play with," he says.

"My stepfather hated it," Lemmy recalls as he tells the story of how he went off to pursue a career in rock and roll. "But my mother secretly supported it and would send me a fiver here and there."

For nearly 35 years Lemmy Kilmister's throaty growl has been the main attraction of the heavy rock that is MOTÖRHEAD. He looks taut and fit for a man of 62, but admits that just climbing the stairs to the second-story lair at his local bar, the Rainbow, has him out of breath.

"I gotta get back on the road," he says, sitting down in the club's upstairs hideaway, lighting up (yes, inside), with the first Jack and Coke of the day at his side.

"That's how I stay in shape. That," he adds, "and sex."

Cliveaid, the organization which was set up in 2004 as a fund-raising event for former IRON MAIDEN drummer Clive Burr, will host its first concert of 2009 on May 30 at The Asylum in Birgmingham, England.

The event will feature performances by the following artists:

      MARSHALL LAW
      CLOVENHOOF
      ATTICA RAGE
      RAVEN VANDELLE
      VOODOO JOHNSON
      HURON
      HEADRUSH

Doors open at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are from www.seetickets.com and are priced at a credit-crunch-busting tenner (£10).

Burr is suffering from multiple sclerosis — a disease of unknown cause. The disorder is causing him intermittent numbness and can affect his balance. At present there is no known cure for MS, although he is helping test new drugs in the hope that his body response may contribute to a cure.

Clive joined IRON MAIDEN at the very end of December 1979 and played on the first three albums — "Iron Maiden", "Killers" and "Number of the Beast" — and toured extensively with the band over this groundbreaking period before leaving in early 1983.

On January 7, MEGADETH commenced the recording process for its twelfth studio album at the band's own Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California. The CD is once again being helmed by acclaimed British producer Andy "Undie" Sneap, who produced MEGADETH's last album, "United Abominations" (May 2007, Roadrunner Records).

Tentatively due in September via Roadrunner Records, MEGADETH's forthcoming LP will be the group's first with guitarist Chris Broderick, who replaced Glen Drover at the end of 2007.

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has posted the following update on the band's official web site:

"It has been one month since I got home from the Priest Feast [MEGADETH's European tour with JUDAS PRIEST and TESTAMENT]! And in that time, we have unpacked, repacked for Germany, unpacked, repacked for Anaheim, unpacked, went into the studio and started writing and recording guitar and vocals.

"So far I have sang on seven songs and played rhythm guitar for some rhythm fixes and an arrangement change on one of the songs, we have edited several songs from the block of music each song initially was into a new and individual arrangement on each song. I have played electric, and did rhythm only so far, and Chris [Broderick] has played both electric and acoustic.

"Chris has played almost everyday, for the rest of the day once I grow tired. I went into the room that he was isolated in and he had his special little foot stand for his acoustic in the room and I said, 'Wassup, Estoban!' (or whatever that dude's name is). He smiled and I gotta tell you, this guy is a real gem; Humble, funny, fun to be around, smart, good looking, and considerate of our fans.

"Anyway, I have sang seven songs and with the instrumental track equally eight, there are only three more songs to sing and the vocals are done for the domestic release. I will need to add one more song for the Japanese release. I also need to have a B-song, and I am trying to salvage a song that we opted against for this record. This was a song that Shawn [Drover, drums] wrote and I just didn't like it. I opted to not do it; and then I started to get another idea, like I told them, and to let me see what I come up with.

"Well, Andy and I have come up with something that I think is better, and I will just have to wait and see what Shawn and James [Lomenzo, bass] think when they hear it again after next week when we all reconvene. I wanted to have them come back out because there is a song on here that is heavy as hell and we are going to break out a little more riffing on the end, as well as try to make Shawn's song work. I am doing the same thing with a lyric I was given by James for 'El Pistolero Solitaire' (or how ever we are spelling it).

"I have to get going to get to the studio on time, and its also getting close to the time that we are going to officially announce the tour dates coming up next. Stay tuned for more, and check out my number for TheLiveLine.com [a service launched by Mustaine that enables musicians to connect to their audience over the phone. I recorded Chris playing some stuff on it and I will record some of me playing tomorrow — I start my guitar solos tomorrow. Yeah!"

      New MEGADETH songtitles include:

      * 1320
      * Bite the Hand That Feeds
      * El Pistolero Solitaire (working title)
      * How the Story Ends (working title)
      * Nothing Left to Lose But My Mind
      * The Hardest Part of Letting Go
      * This Day We Fight

Dave Basner of VH1 Classic Radio reports: This summer, JUDAS PRIEST plan to perform their album "British Steel" in its entirety at their live shows, MÖTLEY CRÜE will play all of"Dr. Feelgood" at Crüe Fest gigs and AEROSMITH very well might be following the trend. Joe Perry says the band is pretty close to deciding if they’re going to perform one of their classic records in its entirety when they hit the road in June.

"Well, let's just say we’re closer to it than ever before," he said. "I'm not sure which record it would be, but we've kind of narrowed it down. I bet we'll end up doing it but we won't know until we're in the actual rehearsal studio."

If AEROSMITH does decide to play a full album live, Joe told VH1 Classic Radio which he'd like them to perform.

"I don't know," he said. "I think 'Toys in the Attic' would be fun. We do a lot of songs off the first four records anyway. We've jammed on 'Uncle Salty' onstage a few times. I don't know. The later records with more songs on them, they would take up too much time in the set. We need to leave some room for some of the other standards."

Steve Appleford of Los Angeles Times reports that ALICE IN CHAINS' as-yet-untitled new album will be released mid-September via Virgin/EMI.

The band began work on the CD last October at FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl's private Studio 606 in Northridge, before moving to Hollywood's Henson Recording Studios in December. "We've been working toward this for over a year now," says guitarist Jerry Cantrell. "It's a long haul."

Among the visitors to their recording sessions was late AIC singer Layne Staley's mother, who, along with other family members, has expressed ongoing support for the band. "It was really important that it was OK with them," says manager Susan Silver, who first began representing ALICE IN CHAINS 21 years ago and now co-manages the resurrected band with David Benveniste and his Velvet Hammer firm. "There were a lot of baby steps. The first year especially was such a profound healing for everybody."

There was some initial resistance from within the industry in 2006, particularly from U.S. promoters, she says, but that has largely changed. When Benveniste, who also represents SYSTEM OF A DOWN, DEFTONES and CYPRESS HILL, began approaching record labels with a sampling from the new sessions, the offers started coming from virtually every major label; the band eventually signed with Virgin/EMI.

"The response has been amazing. We got massive offers off of four or five songs," says Benveniste. "The most important thing to me was that we position this as a new band moving forward. The band is not a heritage act — this band is a new act and we're going to market it as such. It's a double-headed monster."

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS has scheduled the following tour dates:

July 07 - Lansing, MI @ Common Ground Music Festival
July 10 - Rama, ONT (Canada) @ Casino Rama *
July 11 - Sarnia, ONT (Canada) @ Rogers Bayfest
July 13 - Ottawa, ONT (Canada) @ Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest

      * Listed on the Casino Rama web site, but not on the band's homepage

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS frontman Scott Weiland told Spin magazine in February that the band will release a new album in early 2010. In an interview on his last solo tour, Weiland revealed that guitarist Dean DeLeo and bassist Robert DeLeo have begun writing music, explaining, "Those guys have already been writing the instrumental music ... with STP, Robert, and Dean write the chords and riffs and then they bring stuff to me." Asked if he had heard any finished songs yet, Weiland added, "No, except for the stuff we jammed at sound check. And some of that was really cool ... So when I'm finished doing my thing, I'll hear what kind of ideas they have. And in the spring we'll be ready to record."

Weiland said that the album, STP's sixth studio effort and first since 2001's "Shangri-La-Dee-Da", will arrive early next year.

He did not address a recent lawsuit filed against him and STP drummer Eric Kretz by the band's label, Atlantic Records, for breach of contract, nor did he reiterate his recently stated desire to record outside the major label system.

STP reunited last year for a six-month tour that ended in late October. Since then Weiland has been touring behind his second solo album, "Happy In Galoshes", which came out in November.

The collective foursome known as SOULS OF WE — featuring legendary guitarist George Lynch (DOKKEN, LYNCH MOB) and charismatic frontman London Legrand (BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION) — will make its live debut on Saturday, May 23 at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood, California. For this special show, the band will perform its "Let The Truth Be Known" album in its entirety.

SOULS OF WE's lineup for the concert will be as follows:

George Lynch (DOKKEN, LYNCH MOB) - Guitar
London LeGrand (BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION) - Vocals
Johny Chow (CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, FIREBALL MINISTRY) - Bass
Jordan Mancino (AS I LAY DYING) - Drums

Lynch and Legrand came together by a chance meeting on Melrose in Hollywood. "Back when George was putting together LYNCH MOB, I read in a magazine that he was looking for a singer," explains Legrand. "I made a homemade audition tape on my jam box and sent it to his manager, but I never got a call back. Anyway, years later I'm standing on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood and I see George. I decided I didn't have anything to lose, so I walked up to him and said, 'How come you never got back to me on that tape?' He looked confused at first and then started laughing. We hit it off immediately and he invited me to come check out a new batch of songs he was working on. He gave me a tape of music, and that night I went home and finished three songs."

The chemistry between Lynch and Legrand was instant and undeniable. "London is a unique visionary and poet," stated Lynch. "His words are powerful and descriptive. I feel like I have finally found my musical soulmate."

Rounding out SOULS OF WE's recording lineup was powerhouse drummer Yael (TOM MORELLO, ALEX SKOLNICK) and bassist Johny Chow.

"SOULS OF WE is a dream band where I got to pick and chose players not because one is more famous than the other, but because I really respect and want to play with these people," stated Lynch. "We auditioned many technically great drummers, but something was missing," says Lynch. "When Yael walked in, she brought the swagger and sleaze we were looking for as well as technical ability."

Chow and Lynch were introduced by a mutual friend. "A friend of mine kept telling me that George and I would hit it off and that I would be perfect for his new project," says Johny. "Yael was already in the picture, and I had already played in three other bands with her, so I knew the chemistry was there. After hearing the music, I knew this could be something great."

With all of the elements of danger, lust, life, rebellion and love, SOULS OF WE has crafted one of the most honest and brilliant albums of the decade. Their explosive debut effort, "Let The Truth Be Known", is a modern rock album that can't be pigeonholed to any time or genre. From sex-fueled rockers ("Push It", "Come and Go") to songs about inner demons and personal struggles ("January"), this band of rock 'n' roll saviors is making music that's both honest and innovative.

Lynch and Legrand originally started crafting the songs that would ultimately make up "Let The Truth Be Known" five years ago. However, the project was temporarily put on hold for a couple of years while Lynch worked on various projects and Legrand joined BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION, the band featuring Nikki Sixx of MÖTLEY CRÜE and Tracii Guns from L.A. GUNS. After the BRIDES split, Legrand and Lynch rekindled their partnership and finished work on their most ambitious project yet.

"Let The Truth Be Known" was self-produced in various studios around Los Angeles and mixed by Mudrock (AVENGED SEVENFOLD, GODSMACK). The record features several guest musicians including, drummer Morgan Rose (SEVENDUST) and bassist Fred Leclercq (DRAGONFORCE). "We went in to this project with no funding, no label, no producer and no band," explains Lynch. "We were just doing demos and making the music that we wanted to make. There was no one looking over our shoulders and no deadlines."

When asked about the music, Legrand offers his insight on a couple of the songs. "'Let The Truth Be Known' is a song that shouldn't piss off anybody that's not guilty of the words I'm saying. It's a fuck you to those who fucked me. 'January' is a true story of deception fueled by drug addiction. I wrote this song about the final days of BRIDES OF DESTRUCTION.”

"The music is dangerous and beautiful at the same time, but it definitely has a fuck you element to it," states Legrand. "The songs are very personal to me. Growing up, I was really quiet and shy and writing was my way of being heard. There are a lot of kids out there that think they're in this world alone. I want to let them know they're not alone. We are all the souls of we."

Portuguese metallers MOONSPELL have released the following statement regarding the cancellation of the band's April 20, 2009 concert in Minsk, Belarus on "The Darkest Tour: Filthfest II", also featuring CRADLE OF FILTH, TURISAS and DEAD SHAPE FIGURE:

"We are extremely disappointed by the fact we had to cancel the shows. The reasons [that were posted] on both Neopolis and CRADLE OF FILTH site [incorrect travel permits] is accurate but MOONSPELL might add that the bands' buses entered Belarus territory and were meeting for possible solutions for the day. On the event that the truck with ALL of our tour equipment was held due to a bureaucratic detail in the border made all our efforts worthless.

"We have planned carefully this trip with the promoter, with the embassies and were caught off guard by an excessive zeal from the border staff.

"Goes without saying that all the bands were eagerly anticipating the show as it was a premiere for everyone. We can assure you we are doing our best to reschedule the show and we are pretty sure we will do so up to the end of the year, the sooner, the better, though no specific date can be advanced so far.

"Thanks for your comprehension. We understand and share the frustration but look forward to make it up for you on a near future."

MOONSPELL released its long-awaited new DVD, "Lusitanian Metal", in December in Europe via Century Media Records. The first disc features one complete live show recorded live in Katowice in 2004, all video clips (from "Opium" to "Everything Invaded"), an in-depth interview with all current band members and a detailed discography. The second disc offers a historical overview of the Portuguese metal group's period as a Century Media recording artist, with no less than 50 live tracks, starting with some very old-school live rehearsal recordings back in 1992 and ending with live footage from the "Spreading The Eclipse Tour".

"Lusitanian Metal" is available as luxurious limited-edition kingsize mediabook with both DVDs as well as a CD with the complete Katowice show as well as a standard 2DVD in a super jewel case. The CD included in the limited edition is also available separately.

Commented the group in a statement: "The past few weeks have been a bit crazy, and we apologize to all the fans who have bought tickets to the shows that have now been cancelled. It has been difficult to try and fit everything in around the recording schedule, but the most important thing is for us to finish the album."

KORPIKLAANI will soon headline the Paganfest in the U.S. alongside PRIMORDIAL, MOONSORROW, BLACKGUARD and SWASHBUCKLE. The group will also perform at the Barby Club in Tel Aviv, Israel on October 16.

KORPIKLAANI's last CD, "Korven Kuningas", came out on March 21, 2008. The CD entered the album chart in the band's home country at position No. 16.

"Korven Kuningas" was released as a limited first edition with bonus tracks and on white colored vinyl. There is also a strictly limited digipak version (limited and numbered to 500 copies) which includes a drinking horn on a wall holder.

Gary Graff of Billboard.com reports that a new KORN album — the follow-up to 2007's "Untitled" — could be out "within the year" according to bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu, while the group is also continuing work on a planned album of covers.

Fieldy tells Billboard.com that he, founding bandmates Jonathan Davis and James "Munky" Shaffer, and drummer Ray Luzier have been "really banging it out" in his basement studio in Laguna Hills, California, coming up with "a bunch of songs" with original KORN producer Ross Robinson. He adds that "there's nothing lyrically put down yet," but Davis may be taking a studio on the road when KORN kicks off its tour with AVENGED SEVENFOLD on Saturday in Tucson, Arizona to begin laying down ideas.

Working with Robinson again, Fieldy notes, is "really bringing out, like, old-school KORN. It's heavy riffs and we're trying to strip it down raw and get those heavy groove riffs that make you want to hop around or jump around or just go crazy. We're going towards that."

The Pulse of Radio reports that AVENGED SEVENFOLD has been slammed in the press by another band for the second time this year. In a new interview with Metal Hammer magazine, guitarist Tim McTague of the Christian metal group UNDEROATH takes on the Southern California heavy rock act, saying, "People might associate us with AVENGED SEVENFOLD because they're pissed Republicans and 'so metal', but they're a gimmick, they're a circus. They can't play and they can't write a song. What's worse is the way they look. If you need to have make-up and crappy names like Synyster Gates to sell records, then you shouldn't be here. That's not rock'n'roll to me."

Earlier this year in an interview with Campus Circle, NOFX singer Fat Mike said about the group, "AVENGED SEVENFOLD is the epitome of what's wrong with rock and roll. They support Bush. Support the Iraq War. Wouldn't accept a drink 'cause they have to play the next day, but tell everyone they party. And play to a fucking DAT tape. However, a couple of them are decent poker players."

AVENGED SEVENFOLD recently closed out a year and a half of touring behind its self-titled 2007 album with two shows in Southern California and one in Las Vegas.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD will head into the studio later this year to begin working on their next album.
